D&D General D&D Evolutions You Like and Dislike [+]

To reiterate what Riggs said in his seminar, "one thing that stayed popular from the get-go was the idea of implementing "cooldown" periods for powers. This eventually became the AED part of the AEDU suites of abilities."

You're not wrong about that. None other than Ben Riggs has told us that WoW was the impetus for 4E's creation, and that designers were told to try and build a game that would appeal to its audience.

D&D General The 3.5 Binder was a really cool class

In general, I find it hard to discuss things with someone who's intent on misrepresenting the other person's outlook, particularly when they insist on doing so in the most over-dramatic way possible. Hence, I'll just point out that this "problem" is not in the least "unavoidable," as that's...

D&D General The 3.5 Binder was a really cool class

All groups are different, but that sounds like something of an overstatement. D&D is a team game, and most players realize before they ever sit down that A) the actions of someone else's character can impact their own, and B) bad rolls of the dice happen.

D&D General D&D Evolutions You Like and Dislike [+]

Fun fact, Set 5: Immortals (1986) let characters who had become immortals (i.e. gods) increase their ability scores up to a maximum of 100: Wrath of the Immortals (1992) kept that rule, albeit with some tweaking about how the bonuses were applied (the full rules for which are too long to...

AD&D 2E was very clear that ability scores went up to 25, which was their absolute maximum, and the tables in the PHB reflected that.

Including a sidebar devoted specifically to this topic (page 16) is not what "zero expectation" looks like.

D&D General The $150,000 Question: How TSR Learned It Was Dying (And Why I Was in the Room) by Ken "Whit" Whitman

I'm glad someone else is saying this. Whitman already has a new page up for his latest "venture" of taking money to reach out to old TSR employees, and it's laughably barren of content, including having listings for individuals that he can connect customers to that are still placeholders...

    Where are the forum rules?

I'm pretty sure it's that "Terms and rules" listing at the bottom-right of every page, between "Contact us" and "Privacy policy." That said, it has nothing at all about "plus" threads. 🤷‍♂️

D&D General The 3.5 Binder was a really cool class

You don't have to play out an elaborate deception when you can just make a Bluff check, either, but there's typically some expectation that a role-playing game will involve a certain amount of role-playing.

D&D General The 3.5 Binder was a really cool class

The issue with this is that D&D is not—and never has been—a "storytelling" game. It's not designed for it, and trying to make it play like one while keeping it recognizably D&D is the very definition of a square peg in a round hole. I think D&D is broader than most people think in terms of what...

D&D General The 3.5 Binder was a really cool class

I liked the idea that clerics would petition for spells, instead of simply taking them for granted. The problem (as I saw it) was that everyone treated this like it was at best a chore and at worst an invitation for the DM to screw you over under the auspices of your god punishing you for some...

D&D General The 3.5 Binder was a really cool class

You do realize that the Incarnum system got reinvented (since it wasn't Open Game Content) as "akashic magic" for PF1, right? And that it was popular enough that people are still making content for it?
