It is time to forgive WOTC and get back onboard.

If there's no One Ring to rule them all, then you don't need to gather up all your forces to stop Mordor. Wait...I think I'm mixing up my analogies :)

D&D General So how about alignment, eh?

Yeah I have to admit, I liked neither Civil War nor Incursion in the comics. While it was supposed to be morally debatable, I personally found it a bit stomach churning and wanting to scream at the writers. I actually stopped reading Marvel comics for awhile because of those two story lines...

D&D General So how about alignment, eh?

Well, this is precisely why I don't like these alignment descriptors. You yourself say that Captain America isn't exactly Lawful, even though Cap kind of epitomizes the Paladin ideal (minus following a God). On the other hand, Tony Stark may seem to be Chaotic. He's wild, carefree and does his...

I have been wondering about this too. They just said they wouldn't touch it, which I take that to mean as they won't alter it...at all. Which means, it's still revocable. I am not sure how putting it under the CC-BY affects that though.

It is time to forgive WOTC and get back onboard.

But if you play other games, that's reasonable and means you are open to something else. I have seen some people say in threads (on other forums, I don't recall any saying that here) that they only wish to play D&D in one incarnation or another. I also saw some Youtube videos that suggested...

It is time to forgive WOTC and get back onboard.

I'm not sure how that's a positive for WotC? Can you elaborate? If I were in WotC's shoes, I would want a unified player market, not a divisive one. Those three bullet points I mentioned aren't just bad for the players who want the community to open their arms up again for WotC, it's bad for...

D&D General So how about alignment, eh?

The alignment system probably did not come into being whole cloth due to it being derived from a wargame. But I do feel like it became a quick litmus test of "what am I allowed to kill to get experience and hoard it's treasure". I'd also challenge the notion of mass media having good and evil...

D&D General So how about alignment, eh?

I think some of this betrays D&D's roots as a wargame system. You needed to easily distinguish who the "bad guys" were so the players could promptly kill them. Unless of course your players were a bunch of murder hobos anyway  As D&D evolved past dungeon looting, I think that's when...

It is time to forgive WOTC and get back onboard.

I think what we're seeing is that many fans of D&D feel either betrayed or dismayed by the rest of the D&D community. I have a feeling that they think that all this turning of backs by the D&D community against WotC is pointless, because WotC gave up trying to change things, so why not let...

D&D General So how about alignment, eh?

I was in your boat. I too played AD&D before I was even a teenager and also felt like alignment was odd, though I couldn't put my finger on it. By the time I got to my teens, I didn't like it at all. I think it infects players perceptions more than just with D&D. The kool-aid also made some...

Pathfinder, Cthulhu, Level Up: D&D Competitors Start To Sell Out

Absolutely this. I've been bemoaning the stranglehold of D&D/5e in the industry for years now. It's truly boggled my mind how many gaming groups either simply don't know there are other TTRPG's out there, or are reticent to try anything new. One could argue that having just one game system...

RPG Design: How do you build a new world?

I saw this too and almost bought it, until I saw all the comments. Seems like the authors were drawing from some (possibly?) outdated and racist sources. I say "possibly" because there appears to be some claims (mostly by Maoris) of some of the information appearing in the book being racist...

RPG Design: How do you build a new world?

Yeah, this is definitely something I've noticed even when using other published worlds and game systems. Players mostly are interested only in whatever has consequences for them. If it can't heal them, earn them glory, make them richer or more powerful, it's just a blip on the radar. So...

RPG Design: How do you build a new world?

Interesting idea. It sounds like you do a lot of dynamic building based on player interest and feedback, which honestly, I hadn't even considered. I was thinking more of creating some major scaffolding first before even letting others know what the world was about. Which in hindsight...

RPG Design: How do you build a new world?

Did the world evolve out of the story more, or the story out of the world? I guess another way to ask it is, did you find that your story was first in mind, and then you built up the world around that? Or while creating the world, did that give you further ideas about your story?

RPG Design: How do you build a new world?

For those who have built their own worlds (not campaigns, but entire worlds from whole cloth), how do you go about it? I guess a more meta question is, does the world evolve to fit the story, or does the story emerge from the world? I think obviously it's a little of both, but does one...

Why We Should Work With WotC

Pretty much 10x this. I'm also old enough to remember those days, having first started AD&D back in the early 80s. However, I left D&D even before they became the They Sue Regularly evil empire. Why? Because I learned there was a vast treasure trove of other deserving TTRPG's and gaming...

WOIN Open-Licensed WOIN Starter Set Coming in 2023

I'm with you. Ironically, I like detailed and crunchy games, but nowadays the vast majority of RPG systems is just narrative bloat. Take for example the recently released Avatar RPG. I haven't played any Powered by the Apocalypse games before, but the rules are buried in paragraph after...

    D&D 5E (2024) Change in Charisma Description

How would you model Adolf Hitler or Abraham Lincoln then? As pointed out by others, looks could be a part of charisma, but it's not a necessary component of it. Also, how would you rate someone who is very attractive (as rated by a majority of society for example) but who has no force of...

D&D General Has the OGL/WotC debacle motivated you to create your own Fantasy Heartbreaker or homebrew?

I need to look at the ORC license too. I'm kind of splitting my game into two parts, the game system itself which would need some kind of open gaming and/or open source license (since I've also been writing a framework/library for it), but a copyrighted/proprietary license for the actual game...
