D&D 5E (2014) Is favored enemy and natural explorer really that bad?

Another thing I want to bring up is Primeval Awareness. In a Storm King's Thunder campaign I ran a player was playing a ranger, and we ultimately both found the ability kinda weak while simultaneously annoying. It detects your favored enemy within 1 mile/6 miles of you, but doesn't tell you...

D&D General I'm reading the Forgotten Realms Novels- #202 The Howling Delve by Jaleigh Johnson (Dungeons 2)

The monster form was actually an ability you got in the Baldur's Gate 2 game if I remember correctly, although as a story point it may not have been used well in the story, it has been a long time since I've read them.

Fun fact, in the original Tales of the Sword Coast expansion for BG 1, if you use the premade party the Bhaalspawn is a fighter named Abdel. Not sure if the story was made before it was released or vice versa though.

D&D General I'm reading the Forgotten Realms Novels- #202 The Howling Delve by Jaleigh Johnson (Dungeons 2)

The 3 Baldur's Gate novelizations specifically, not D&D novels entirely. Sorry about not being clear.

D&D General I'm reading the Forgotten Realms Novels- #202 The Howling Delve by Jaleigh Johnson (Dungeons 2)

I remember all of them being pretty bad, although I'll fully admit I was a huge fan of the games and so that may have colored my views to some degree.

D&D 5E (2014) Is favored enemy and natural explorer really that bad?

Yah, the problem with a first level Ranger is that the only two abilities they get then are situational, which I don't think any other class has. The other half caster, the Paladin gets one at first level, but also gets some useful healing as an ability. Most everyone else gets generally all...

D&D 5E (2014) Is favored enemy and natural explorer really that bad?

For my own personal games, I simply added to Favored Enemy that the Ranger could cast Hunter's Mark on an enemy of that type without expending a spell slot. It worked pretty well at low levels, the only time a player played the class, although I have no idea if that would become too good once...

D&D 5E (2014) Which MTG Setting would you want as an official D&D Setting?

As you can see, I'm missing a lot of things.

D&D 5E (2014) Which MTG Setting would you want as an official D&D Setting?

So, I missed the No more MtG settings thing, which I might have voted for. I ended up voting for Eldraine because I liked the flavor and setting from what I've seen. Other interesting ones would include Kaldheim, and Tarkir. Strixhaven is interesting too, but could be hard to make work I think...

D&D 5E (2014) Is favored enemy and natural explorer really that bad?

The replacement feature in Tasha's itself kinda does that, although it gets rid of choosing a terrain entirely for some more generic all purpose survival abilities.

D&D 5E (2014) Is favored enemy and natural explorer really that bad?

Both Favored Enemy and Natural Explorer have the problem of needing to guess what is going to be useful. In some games, that might be easy (Rime of the Frostmaiden, Red Hand of Doom, Tomb of Annihilation, etc) but other times you choose wrong and basically don't have any 1st level abilities...

    D&D 5E (2014) Guide to cruddy spells (v1.01)

Yah, Bless is a spell I've seen clerics use throughout their careers. When I played my cleric I quickly realized that besides Spiritual Guardian and Bless, most of their other concentration combat spells are a bit niche to be honest. Bless is a solid and almost always useful spell to fall back...

    D&D 5E (2014) Guide to cruddy spells (v1.01)

I literally cannot take a thread of "cruddy spells" seriously when Bless is on the list.

D&D General Reading Ravenloft the setting

That seems like kinda a problem with a sourcebook for a tabletop game though? The number one thing a writer should be thinking is how the player characters are going to interact with it.

D&D General Things That Bug You

I have quite a few friends that are fans of different gish concepts, so I can definitely get that diversity of options is a big draw. And I while do think it's possible to balance the magical gish with the nonmagical warrior, it's quite the tightrope. Which I think is part of my problem with...

D&D General Things That Bug You

First, I understand why gishes are popular, and that is because the idea of a magic swordsman is incredibly cool. With that said though, I tend to gravitate towards Fighters, Barbarians and Rogues, so the less magical classes personally. And the concept of the gish is really hard to balance...

D&D General Reading Ravenloft the setting

I was only really commenting on Jacqueline Reiner's curse specifically in my post. With Dominic, it sounds like there is a lot more in his backstory and motivations involving his view of women. While in Reiner's case it feels more like the Dark Powers just kinda were lazy that day and threw...

D&D General Reading Ravenloft the setting

Just my two cents, maybe worth less because I'm not exactly a Ravenloft expert, but the love curse thing sounds extremely tacked on. As discussed, it doesn't have anything to do with Jacqueline's evil deeds, pre darklord motivations or backstory. It literally feels off, and it seems like it's...

    Marvel vs DC

I think most people assume Bruce does stuff off panel. The comics are just focusing on the interesting superhero stuff, not the fund raisers, boardroom meetings or uninteresting patrols where nothing happens. Even the comics mention that Bruce is a big philanthropist. Superhero comics in...
