Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

On days I'm angry at everyone and not driving on the interstate myself, I'd almost rather go to Finland's "day-fine" system https://www.weforum.org/stories/2018/06/in-finland-speeding-tickets-are-linked-to-your-income/ Otherwise, yes, Sweden's is much better.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I find what it takes to be interesting greatly depends on how much work I have (more work to avoid makes it easier for things to be interesting) and how close the deadline is (closer is harder to be interesting because I still have some survival instincts).

Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Borderlands - First Impressions

I was digging some more on alignment in the module/times, and I had no recollection of this in (L-N-C-only) Moldvay. Talk about "interpretation of the people playing"! Holmes (with L-C-G-E-N) had: Tangentially, it looks like there are also some changes about alignment and the temple going...

<squints at Moldvay Basic rules> "Lawful behavior is usually the same as behavior that could be called 'good'." "Chaotic behavior is usually the same as behavior that could be called 'evil'." <realizes there is certainly must be a discussion somewhere of the small space between them and drops...

Dungeons & Dragons: Heroes of the Borderlands - First Impressions

Goodman Games' Remastered version agrees it should be more consistently switched to murder, even though it doesn't quite get all the serial killer flavor you want: "The Mad Hermit approaches the characters on friendly terms, claiming to be a holy man seeking goodness in nature. And perhaps he...

Maybe, maybe not... "For many years a solitary hermit has haunted this area of the forest, becoming progressively wilder and crazier and more dangerous." "(The DM may choose to have the Mad Hermit approach the group on friendly terms, claiming to be a holy man seeking goodness in nature -...

The Hobgoblins in Cave F ("Come in - we'd like to have you for dinner!") are. Rumor 1: A merchant, imprisoned in the caves, will reward his rescuers. Room 24: A plump, half-dead merchant, scheduled to be eaten tonight in a special banquet. If he is rescued and returned to the KEEP, the Guild...

People who are good at things don't need to improve still !?!?!? Does your scale not include an amazing, fantastic, or even just very good too?

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Taking a break from the real world, the two (traditionally not great) college football teams I root for most are now a combined 5-1 on the season and the two I root against most (Clemson and Notre Dame) are a combined 1-4.:) Don't think it will hold out that way for the full season, but it's a...

As you say, this is not an academic setting. But over half way through my third decade as a psychometrician and statistician it's a pet peeve I failed my save on letting pass. The wide spread mistaken belief that things should follow a normal curve or that certain cut percents are magical lead...

As a follow-up for those who are interested, one common way of linking the subjective level to the statistics is described at: https://assess.com/what-is-a-standard-setting-study/

I think the biggest misconception people have about the bell curve is thinking that here is any particular reason for most things to follow it. iQ can (because the model can force it to because it is a latent variable), things that are sums or averages of many independent things and (insert...

I have to agree with @AlViking here that being slightly below average at something is not any definition of bad I have encountered, whether in sports or education or psychometrics. For example, having a requirement that half of all employees at a firm get a "bad" performance evaluation (or...

I would posit that perpetuating or encouraging the idea that there is some construct "intelligence" that meaningfully encompasses lots of things - and that different humanish looking things have different typical values of it is not great. Even if they have decided that some of the formerly...

Given that the thread was arguing about what percent of them are "bad" and throwing around things like 20-25%, it didn't seem like that far of a leap. Further, I didn't call for such a scale, I said it feels like such a scale should be out there. I meant in the sense of our hobby that it is...

It feels like there should be a 3-18 rating scale out there somewhere for DMs. How low on the scale would be "bad" as opposed to "mediocre", "so-so", and "average"?

Musing that touches on rules, verisimilitude, realism, what the characters experience in the world, and not wanting to change sacred cows that make D&D be D&D... Hit points. How have no PCs or NPCs in game figured out that "living beings" are essentially spirits whose essence is always trying...
