D&D 5E (2024) What would your ideal rest mechanic look like?

It's worked for multiple, different groups of players. I often encourage DMs to try it because it usually reveals just how little the players care about in-game time between rests. It seems like it would feel artificial, but it produces enough fun play that people tend to forget worries about...

D&D 5E (2024) What would your ideal rest mechanic look like?

It's hard to understand the most important function of the rest system: control of the game's pacing. It's an artificial restraint on the recovery of the characters' limited resources. It makes the game challenging and rewarding. The biggest hurdle to accepting this idea comes from players and...

D&D 5E (2014) Moving out of concealment to attack - when is stealth broken?

Remarkable that the "principal rules designer of Dungeons & Dragons" couldn't come up with rules to solve D&D's alleged tradition of problematic stealth rules.

D&D General Your thoughts on "Social Combat" systems

What social conflict systems have you tried in your 10+ years of experience? How exactly did they fall flat, and why?

D&D General Extract information from hostile NPCs - DM tips?

This is exactly right. The OP's starting position, that there's information that the BBEG would never reveal, needs to be retired. If there's information that will help move your game and story forward, it's the DM's job to think of multiple ways that it can get into the players hands.

D&D 5E (2014) One player Dungeon crawl: Tips, helpful PDFs?

You should check out Scarlet Heroes, a system for adjusting the rules of a game like D&D to allow a single PC's value to scale up to match an entire party. The idea is that you can use old, published modules as written thanks to the way that Scarlet Heroes builds that single character. It will...

D&D 5E (2014) Help required creating a character for Eberron...

OK, go with this. Choose the Hexblade patron and Pact of the Blade. Your patron is a powerful angel or devil (your choice) from Shavarath, the Eternal Battleground. Shavarath is the "Plane of War" in Eberron's cosmology. If you choose an angelic patron, they represent war fought for a just...

D&D 5E (2014) Help required creating a character for Eberron...

Struggling how? The central part of any Warlock concept is choosing the patron, so should we assume that's where you're having trouble? Give us something to work with. Which Warlock patrons do you find interesting or want to use? Which Pact(s) do you like? Are there any races you like? Any you...

D&D 5E (2014) Unraveling the Mystery Too Quickly?

If it's not too late, you should read all of The Alexandrian's Dragon Heist Remix and adapt your ongoing game to match it. The Alexandrian has a strong background in Call of Cthulhu, so you're getting a reorganization and restructuring of Dragon Heist that should make it easier for you to run...

D&D 5E (2014) Kate Welch on Leaving WotC

OK, so just connect the dots back to my first post. ;)

D&D 5E (2014) Kate Welch on Leaving WotC

This reflects the surprise I originally mentioned. It’s not my impression that the day-to-day work on D&D books by D&D designers at Kate’s level is being handled by managers at Nathan’s/Ray’s level, even if that manager was part of the hiring process. But, again, my thin understanding of the D&D...

D&D 5E (2014) Kate Welch on Leaving WotC

I never watched Spoilers & Swag, so I'll defer to your experience. If it's your impression that Stewart was Welch's immediate supervisor and/or the person whom she worked for the most, then maybe I don't have an accurate impression of how the D&D team works.

D&D 5E (2014) Kate Welch on Leaving WotC

If you can show me the org. chart from the time she was hired, I'd love to see it.

D&D 5E (2014) Kate Welch on Leaving WotC

I'm surprised how often speculation like this focuses on the highest levels of the org. chart, on people who appear to be 2-3 levels of management higher than the unhappy employee. In ever corporate job I've had where I've been miserable, it's not because someone three levels up on the chart has...

    D&D 5E (2014) Long Rest is a Problem

That's not the only other thing to do. You correctly identified the tension between "in-game narrative" and "out-of-game mechanics", but chose the wrong bullet to bite. Do what 13th Age does and connect rest to an out-of-game schedule. Remove the players' ability to decide when they can rest and...

D&D General Let's Talk About Eberron

An Adventurer's Guide to Eberron is an old 3.5 sourcebook that provides a perfect introduction to Eberron for new players. It's a big, glossy brochure about the setting, filled mostly with art rather than text. You can give it to your players and tell them to flip through it to get the basics of...

Vampire the Masquerade - 5th edition or V20

I played a lot of V:tM 1e and 2e, so I'm pretty familiar with the V20 system. I've read V5, but haven't played it. I don't know if you found this review of V5, but I found it very helpful in warning me away from V5.
