    Winter Fantasy Convention History

Hi all, I decided to add a timeline to the Wiki page for the Winter Fantasy convention (formerly D&D Experience). The convention has gone back as far as 1977, and I'm looking for more sources on what took place. Dates, special events, locations, start and end of major organized play programs...

Learn about D&D organized play options

Updated for today's "In the Works" column, which previews the upcoming D&D Encounters and current and upcoming D&D Lair Assault adventures. The Encounters season starts up on the 6th of February with a 'session 0' for character creation. This is also a time when the players and DM can choose...

Learn about D&D organized play options

I've updated the first post to reflect information on the latest seasons of Lair Assault (Temple of the Sky God, already in progress) and the upcoming Encounter season (Against the Cult of Chaos). Temple of the Sky God is interesting in that it provides flying mounts as part of what PCs bring...

Gygax Magazine? [UPDATE 3 - Electric Boogaloo]

I'm generally wary of efforts by different entities to capitalize upon a defunct business or product name. On the other hand, the history of TSR and Gygax... geez, who knows what's right? And, I'm always glad to see new companies and new ideas enter the gaming space. It will be cool to see how...

Changes to Winter Fantasy 2013 - Pathfinder, Board Games, And Magic: The Gathering

We'll just have to agree to disagree. I don't see the RPGA as having been just one thing, nor do I see it as gone. I see the name as having been set aside and the character of organized play as always evolving. The name RPGA was seen positively by some and negatively by others (sometimes very...

D&D Encounters: New season: War of Everlasting Darkness

Also, the thread here in the official forums for Encounters provides pregen characters for levels 1-8. This community effort provides any store with pregens so that if you have a walk-in player you don't need to sit them down to create a character. Because each week this season the PCs level up...

D&D Encounters: New season: War of Everlasting Darkness

If your store ever has problems with getting kits, they should contact their WPN reps. Those reps are usually really good about fixing any problems. Of course, if your store forgot to order the kit then that can be a big problem. Still, it is worth prodding them to contact their rep.

Changes to Winter Fantasy 2013 - Pathfinder, Board Games, And Magic: The Gathering

I mean this in a nice way: "real" is arbitrary. There was no one "real Winter Fantasy". The RPGA changed the format constantly. From the original tournament games or one-shot delves of the early RPGA, to classics (an early staple and now again part of the format), to living campaign 4-hour...

Learn about D&D organized play options

I'm actually very impressed with how it has gone. A few years back, I would have guessed that allowing players to play evil drow at cross-purposes with one another would have been disastrous. But, I was really pleased that for most groups it was a fun diversion from normalcy. I had similar...

This article by Chris Tulach on the Wizards site provides additional information on the upcoming Encounters season. This part may be of particular interest: "Realms-changing secrets will be revealed and your characters have a chance to participate in an important moment in the transition from...

Learn about D&D organized play options

I move zig! Recently Dungeon's Master made a great review of the latest kit for War of Everlasting Darkness. It features a really interesting and different approach. Some aspects reflect D&D next, such as a more open play style with multiple encounters and options. Others are pretty novel and...

Changes to Winter Fantasy 2013 - Pathfinder, Board Games, And Magic: The Gathering

I'm a member of the Ashes of Athas campaign. The campaign will conclude at this upcoming Winter Fantasy convention and what we have planned is really exciting. The conclusion will be a lot of fun for players who have followed the campaign from the beginning but will also be accessible to those...

One option is the My Realms adventures along with closely related story arcs. You can write/outline a My Realms adventure where you give the PCs the necessary knowledge/hooks/story to send them to Calimshan (perhaps a prophecy about freeing a city). Then you can run the closely nit Calimshan...

LFR is currently the only one on the list that you can freely and easily run for a group such as a college club. Simply go to the LFR site, download the adventures, make sure PCs are made with the Character Creation Guide (on the same site), and play. You can also order Living Divine for a fee...

Mike Mearls: A Paladin, Ranger, and Wizard With Arcane Tradition Walk Into A Tavern

I really worry about the rogue if their sneak attack is a damage boost, but they don't get it all the time. That creates the classic problem of the rogue's player trying all the time to get sneak attack every round and either being frustrated or breaking the game if they succeed. What if Sneak...

Pre-Release Review of 13th AGE (Part 2) by Pelgrane Press

I find myself agreeing with just about everything but the final rating. I think docking an in-development copy for presentation isn't particularly fair. I've playtested 13th Age both as a DM and player and we had a really good time. I also recently was treated to a session at PAX run by Rob...

Learn about D&D organized play options

Gen Con and PAX have now concluded. Both saw many tables of the D&D Next Playtest, as well as other organized play events and demos. It is worth noting that D&D now offers a mix of experiences at conventions, from traditional 4-hour events to classics to short board game demos. For example, the...
