The players I've been GMing for have managed to be neither of those things. Of course, they haven't managed to be between those things, either.

I don't force any randomness on the players they do not choose, and I do not feel as though the campaigns I've run have been predictable. Then again, the players I've been running for have managed to make characters that are actually distinguishable from each other.
