D&D General D&D Archetypes that spread out to other settings and media

1983. Sure, Gammorians are in there somewhere. I find it interesting that for the Lord of the Rings movies, Jackson went with a very traditional goblin look for Moria orcs, but not the "D&D orc" for the rest.

Distinct Game Modes: Combat vs Social vs Exploration etc...

You are talking about a core mechanic. Not quite the same thing, as @dbm articulated.

But they don't. Convincing s shop keeper and disarming a trap maybe, but combat does not look like that. You can't make a skill check to defeat the goblin.

D&D General How do you handle Astral travel?

The Astral Plane is the Worst Plane. I treat it like space, except you can breath. You need a ship, or a dreadnaut to ride. I really dislike the whole psychadelic Dr. Strange astral plane thing and lean much more toward the Astral Sea and you navigate it like using spelljammers.

D&D General D&D Archetypes that spread out to other settings and media

It is my recollection that the looks of Warcraft orcs was a pretty distinct evolution of the Warhammer orc rather than the D&D one. If you look at the FR novel covers of the same time, the D&D orc or goblin does not really look like the Warcraft equivalent. There is, of course, a reciprocal...

D&D 5E (2014) A Time-Based Combat System for 5e (2014): Replacing Actions with Seconds and Making Movement Matter

I have not experienced what your table seems to have trouble with. I don't find the different categories of actions to be difficult for folks to grasp. But counting them is a pain, especially when what you are counting changes over time or between classes. This is true, and granular can be...

    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

I don't know. i think 5.5 which will eventually ask you to buy everything again is more of a cash grab.

D&D General D&D Archetypes that spread out to other settings and media

Were industrious gnomes first popularized in Dragonlance? I don't even know. Did WoW take them from D&D?

Distinct Game Modes: Combat vs Social vs Exploration etc...

That is interesting. I see them as very different. Sure, they use the same resolution system, but combat has a ridiculous amount of granular resources pointed at it, exploration very few, and social next to none. The challenge resolution in each is entirely different, for example.

    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

The 2024 rules changes are not upgrades. They are just different, built to convince you to buy them, not that they are better. The "playtest" was just more marketing BS. They could have just issued anniversary editions of the core books incorporating with new art and on created a rift, but some...

EN World What you thought a thread title said.

My brain keeps reading "Kobold Night Hunters" and I would back THAT game.

D&D 5E (2024) Is WOTC done publishing campaigns?

For this tangent, I am deeply ashamed. The point is the customer base is much larger than it has ever been, and that should mean we actually get a greater variety of products because no single product has to sell to everyone to maintain profitability. But we aren't getting that.

Distinct Game Modes: Combat vs Social vs Exploration etc...

From a GM's perspective, I like when mode shifts occur. It helps me reset my brain to the new thing that is happening. That probably has a lot to do with me being a trad gamer for my whole life.

Distinct Game Modes: Combat vs Social vs Exploration etc...

One thing that I find interesting is how different TTRPGs handle the shift from one mode of playing (talking to the Baron) to another mode of play (combat against the Baron's guards) based on the things happening in play. Some games try and minimize the mode shift such that the mechanics are the...

    D&D 5E (2024) What Is 2026's Big Adventure

Look, i.am just saying that I, personally, want something innovative in D&D and the last innovative thing they did was advantage/disadvantage. Everything else for 5E has been playing it safe, 5E 2024 most egregious of all. Everybody is excited to get yet another dusty setting in Dark Sun and I...

    D&D 5E (2024) What Is 2026's Big Adventure

I reject this notion. The whole classic era of D&D was driven by people new to it (because it was new) and many of them VERY young. D&D veterans tend to make things that look like the D&D they grew up with -- which we have overwhelming evidence for. Note again that I am talking about...
