When "playing it wrong" is more fun

Then the issue doesn't come up because it begins with a game that one doesn't enjoy. Can playing it wrong be more fun? Oh yeah. I'd even recommend it, as long as the whole group is on board. Erm, D&D is more fun when not played by its intended rules and playloops. I don't think it has a...

Spells that hit two opponents and door/wall position

Well, I don't like checkers-like combat. Combatants should be free to move where and when they want. So yes, the wizard might catch a glimpse of both creatures at the same time. Are they both going to stand around like archery butts while spells resolve? Probably not. Allowing it was the...

Worlds of Design: In the Shadow of Tolkien

Ouch. How about, "and even an LOTR-inspired TV series?" What drives people to Draconian RPGs now? Final Fantasy, the Elder Scrolls, and World of Warcraft. Video games.

D&D 5E (2024) New Campaign: game day setup

A for effort, but I'll take the card table over this. By the way, that ship becomes easier for you to reach if the DM side is on the corner of the table instead of the end.

    Worlds of Design: Combat Methods

Modos RPG agrees with this but: Defender must choose to parry - otherwise damage is 1 minimum. GM or PC can halfmax, which simplifies the rolling part for, well, half the die's maximum. Still simple, still no table lookups.

    Realistic Combat that's Simple(ish)

Agreed, and I'd much rather handle these details on the fiction side of things than the rules side. Is that just turn-based combat? Turn-based-plus-opportunity-attacks? Does Dungeon World scratch that itch?

D&D General What if we gave dragonborn four arms?

I'd somehow want them in my game even less? It shouldn't be a problem, except for the weird D&D concept of being able to attack MOAR by wielding more than one weapon.

D&D General Wearing a lantern on your belt?

Even with the cost of that lantern being easier to destroy than one held in hand?

    Maps From Adventures

Words. But not too many, or the PCs won't need to explore. I use dice for quick reference on character positions.

D&D General Wearing a lantern on your belt?

I might be reading the question wrong, but I allow PCs to do whatever they want. And suffer the consequences. Unless the wizard (which doesn't seem to exist anymore) is wearing the belted lantern, there's going to be some armor between the lantern and the pants. And that armor will feel nice...

    AD&D 1E Atheist cleric situation...

Nice take. I was thinking that worshiping the universe meant that its creator delivered one's powers, but I like this too. So, scrolls only? I prefer my spells to be more potential energy than sub-light speed energy.

    General video game discussion

Would you elaborate on these? I thought it was a Call of Duty-like. But speaking of game zen . . . Hopping on a transport truck driven by AI can be a pretty relaxing experience in Arma 3.

Worlds of Design: The Simplicity Solution

If the party doesn't run away, doesn't find the silver, cold, ghost touch spear held by the statue on floor -5, or doesn't kite the monster while the wizard hammers it with magic . . . They deserve that TPK. Also, damage reduction rules shouldn't be in the essential-tier of a game's rules...

Worlds of Design: The Simplicity Solution

I didn't play Chainmail, but I recall things like speed factor in early D&D being even more optional than the complications in today's "streamlined" D&D. Weapon tags like Finesse come to mind. For simplifying though, I remember feeling like I was abandoning my entire game idea when a rule or...

    Optimization and optimizers...

If you say so. One player takes an option that provides one attack, another player takes an option that provides six. The first says the second is breaking the game, the second says that the first doesn't know how to optimize. You are somehow saying one is right, the other, wrong. I'm hoping...
