I’d like to see Drizz’t go full drow on Elminster! :p

D&D 5E (2014) Feat, Magic Items, or Multiclassing? Which do you choose?

Magic items. I don’t allow multiclassing in my game, so that’s not an issue. I nerf or ban a number of feats and I'm stingy with permanent magic items, but the latter have been a core of D&D since day one.

D&D General Languages suck in D&D.

About 60%. 43% of the world’s population is bilingual, according to the Journal of Neurolinguistics, meaning almost half of all people utilize two languages daily. 40% of the world’s population is monolingual, using just one language. 17% of the world’s population is multilingual, or fluent in...

Must You Tell Your Players What Adventure You Are Running?

Definitely not obligated. I rarely throw out adventure names, rather I ask if they are interested in the specific theme. This is mainly because of my habit of messing about the published material and I wouldn't want the players to believe they are playing an out of the box version.

D&D General Do you track ammunition?

As a player, I always track arrows/bolts/bullets. As a DM, I expect the players to do so, although I don't police it tightly except when they are not going to be in a town for a period of time. But I do remind them before they head out.

    Dragonsfoot forums down?

Steve posted that the board software was being updated a couple of days ago. Once that happened I could not log on, although I could view the boards He then said there was an issue with logging on for most/all users, and he would be trying implement a fix over the weekend.

D&D General If we were re-designing the Tiny Hut-esc 'instant shelter' spells what would we change?

My house rule for Tiny Hut is to have it conjure an actual tiny hut: It appears to be a normal log cabin, (15’ x 15’ x 10’ walls) with a peaked roof, a single door, and shutters on every wall. The doors and shutters are equipped with metal bars, but no other locks. The hut is free of any...

GMs: Where and When Do You Run Games

All the players are sitting in their own homes and we play via the Roll20 VTT. We started doing this when COVID hit and we decided to stick with it because it far easier than commuting to a single location.

D&D 5E (2014) For those playing 2014 5e, how are you reacting to the 2024 update?

I expect to stick with 5E exclusively. There hasn't been anything I've heard from the new rules that is worth adding; although that could change.

    How often do you play?

Other, somehow! My new campaign is starting this week, and the intention is to play weekly although I expect we will average biweekly over time. This game is played online with Roll20. I also play in about a dozen PBP games, which I review daily. Not sure how you want to count this as PBP is...

D&D General Poll: Did you watch the D&D cartoon when it was new?

I consider D&D to be playable by kids, but not really a kids, game. I’ve never played with kids as an adult. As far as the cartoon goes as was mentioned previously it was definitely aimed at young kids not young adults.

D&D General Poll: Did you watch the D&D cartoon when it was new?

Too old for it, I was 18 in 1983.

D&D 5E (2014) Not upgrading? What version of D&D 5e are you sticking with?

Pre-TCE, albeit with some bits and bobs from post-TCE (but no custom lineage, artificer, new backgrounds, etc), and a metric poop-tonne of house rules.

    Darkvision Ruins Dungeon-Crawling

Cantrips first appeared in Unearthed Arcana, for AD&D 1E. I believe orisons (for clerics) were from 2E. As others have said, it’s the utility cantrips in 5E that ‘wreck’ some of the resource management/deal with the dark. I voted yes to the poll although I think it might be possible to keep...

D&D General Who was your first character, and do you still play them?

1978 I believe. Human thief, name long forgotten. Wasn’t played after that very first session because he died in about 45 minutes from being rolled up!

    WHAMMAGEDDON 2024

I look forward to receiving my holiday-themed No Prize! I did not hear it until midday on Xmas, in the middle of my Xmas Day playlist. My one trip to the mall last week was without Wham!-incident and as an old retired recluse it was easy while at home.

D&D General Should the DM roll in the open?

When I play, I have no real concern if the DM rolls in the open or not. When I DM in-person, I tend to roll behind a screen because I like having a screen in front of me to cover maps and notes and rolling around the screen is a pain. At the moment, my games are on Roll20, I asked the...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I have no preference for PC death frequency. Voted every 2 to 3 levels as that seems what I expect on average. As an old-schooler, I don't provide plot armour to the PCs if they die, they die. They usually have access to raise dead and the like, but at a cost.

D&D General Folks Who Came Back With 5E: Did You Stay with 5E?

Yes. I started in 1978, probably one of the Basic games, I don’t recall as I didn’t own any of the books or even the dice. Quickly moved into AD&D and mostly stuck with the 1E core rules for man years, adding in bits and bobs from 2E. Sometime in the 90's I stopped playing as the group drifted...

D&D General Do You Use a DM Screen?

For 40+ yers, I used a screen when I DM’d. Usually my old orange AD&D screen with the current edition rules paper-clipped on it. I only ran 2 or 3 sessions of 5E in-person before COVID struck. The next 35+ sessions of that game were online. I have not DM’d since, but should be taking the reins...
