Malazan series by Steve Erikson... anyone read it?

I finished Gardens of the Moon just before Xmas, and I am about 100 pages from the end of Deadhouse Gates. I think the books are worth reading. I am not a fanboy, nor a literary critic, I like reading, and I so far Erikson has been able to keep me interested. I always worry about commiting to a...

    My first LCD

I agree with John. My undrstanding is that the diagonal measurement for a CRT is the size of the picture tube. Invariably a part of the tube is not visible as it is covered by the case of the TV/monitor. LCD panels also measure the full screen, but a much smaller amount of the perimeter is...

All PC dead, what to do?

As far as the Listen checks go, I would have had the PCs make one for the door opening (unless the oil on the hinges was magical, I would only allow a bonus, not automatic success in removing the hinge squeaks), and one for the thief sneaking across the floor. I would have also rolled to see...

Help! Coincidence or Virus or ???

BSODs are back! I moved last weekend, and I am still in the process of getting all of the computers set up. I set up my 2000 machine temporarily so we had net access, and no problems were noted for the 4 or 5 days that it was running. I set up the XP machine 3 days ago, and it is back to...

    Wireless Router Advice

I used a D-Link DI-614+ fpr a long time without any issues, I only replaced it when the power transformer burnt out and I couldn't find a replacement. I bought a DI-524 and it has been fine. For security, you should ensure that the router handles WPA2, if it doesn't I wouldn't buy it. No one...

Help! Coincidence or Virus or ???

This makes total sense for both of my machines. Both have AVG running with automatic updating, so they likely updated to the "bad" version, and it interacted with Wallmaster. Mystery solved!

Help! Coincidence or Virus or ???

Not on the 2000 machine, but I think on the XP machine it got turned on somehow. BUt I have switched it off again! I got the XP machine running by going to a previous restore point, no such thing on 2000, but as I noted, it is running now.

Help! Coincidence or Virus or ???

I didn't think it could be a driver, as I have not changed any in recent memory, but given what happened to you, I will keep it it in mind if the BSOD returns. Interesting. I have not started up Wallmaster on either machine since I got them running, and I guess I won't bother. Time to find a new...

Help! Coincidence or Virus or ???

I did read the link you posted, that page is a copy of the MS KB, and the only software issues they mention are: Stop 0x7F messages can occur after installing incompatible applications, drivers, or system services.Pretty generic info! Nothing was recently installed on the XP box, and only 7Zip...

Help! Coincidence or Virus or ???

Redrobes, I just checked out the Event Viewer...mostly gibberish to me. Things like this after each reboot: Rl'Halsinor, I did write down the STOP numbers: 0x0000007F. The four numbers in the parentheses that followed were all 0's, and the problem is described as an Unexpected Kernel Mode...

Help! Coincidence or Virus or ???

Silvermane, do you have any ideas on what could be the cause of the BSODs? It is possible that there is a hardware issue, but what are the odds that a hardware issue hit two PCs at the exact same time? Especially given that both were working fine on Wednesday, and the BSOD appeared the first...

Help! Coincidence or Virus or ???

I have my fingers crossed that it is simply a software issue. On the XP box I ran AVG which found nothing, then I ran Trend Micro's online scan and it found a couple of items, which I deleted. Still get the STOP BSOD when I try to boot normally. On the Win2000 box I booted into Safe Mode with...

Help! Coincidence or Virus or ???

I did run one of the XP machine, with nothing untoward found, but I think I will run full scans on both machines, to see if anything pops up.

Help! Coincidence or Virus or ???

My wife called me at work, advising her PC at home was showing a BSOD. I get home and reboot, sure enough BSOD with message STOP: 0x0000007F. I boot into Safe Mode, and it works, I try restoring to a point from last night, reboot same BSOD. Her PC is running Win XP Pro SP2. I decide to use my...

Beef - WTC price gouging Canadians

The pricing difference between the US and Canada is mainly due to the exchange rate; and also a charge for shipping. Here's a CBC story on the subject.

Do you let your clerics have all the spells?

I don't even allow the clerics to have access to all of the spells in the PHB! I don't think there is a problem in adding new spells to a game, but you, AS DM, should be deciding which one are allowed and which are not. And even then, the spell might be available in your campaign world, but it...

Oh No! Sharpie on the Battlemap!

The last thread I recall recommended automobile brake cleaner. I used WD40 a few weeks back on a Sharpie-stained battlemat and the Sharpie faded quite a bit although it did not disappear entirely. Then again the Sharpie stain was about 2 years old!
