I think that was the Player's Option Box Set, sometimes it was wrapped up with the second 3.5 Basic set as a combo. With that combo I think you also got a free box of miniatures as well. I got a copy of the Paperback PHB and I think I may have also gotten a rare DMG version as well...

3e and especially 3.5 would be your bane if you didn't like to build your own monster versions or upgrade monsters. They almost demanded you do it for every monster encounter the DM made, and was DM intensive in monster handling and creation. Far more, several times more, than ua or anything...

I never played Dark Future. WHFB (it's been a hot minute for me) used d6's, generally on a table to compare WS or BS to each other and S and T or other stats to determine if you hit and how much damage you did. Dark Future possibly could be the other one you were thinking of?
