The initial run of 3e PHB's were $20. They did quite a massive run (though rather quickly went through them) and kept the price down due to this for that first year or so.

Depends on what they want to use. Adventure and maps are absolutely something experienced players could make good use of. Experienced players may even like using the player boards and other items if they like things like the D&D adventure board games (Castle Ravenloft, etc). There are...
