D&D General Who was your first character, and do you still play them?

Backstabber, a Thief from the Mentzer BECMI in fall 1986. 20 or so minutes into my first game, in the very first combat encounter, he was quickly paralyzed, killed, and eaten by a carrion crawler.

    D&D General Best dungeons?

I really, really like Ythryn but I wish the book had included a lot more maps of the locations inside it - at least the ones where combat is likely. I agree with folks about Tomb of Annihilation being great and Undermountain being a burnout. Ravenloft is really good although the very frequent...

WotC How much does Hasbro / WotC impact your feelings towards D&D?

This is why Dungeon Crawl Classics is p much my current favorite in terms of TTRPG aesthetics. Shadowdark captures this as well. I pretty much want my TTRPGs to look DIY. That said, some modern official D&D artwork I really do love - especially Mike Schley’s maps, and Tomb of Annihilation and...

D&D 5E (2024) Is Shillelagh considered part of the Ranger spell list for purpose of scrolls?

Druidic Warrior does specifically say that if you have that Feat, the chosen cantrips "count as ranger spells for you" (emphasis mine). This implies that if you don't have the Feat, they are not Ranger spells, hence a Ranger couldn't ordinarily cast them from a scroll.

D&D General Folks Who Came Back With 5E: Did You Stay with 5E?

I started with BECMI in 1986, switched to 1E in 87, switched to 2E when it launched in 89, and continued with that until I graduated from high school in Spring 1994. I then basically didn't play at all except for a few abortive attempts at 3E after graduating college, which never went beyond a...

    D&D General Sigil codes

Oh crap it's really good. Potentially life-destroying. There is some NDA stuff so I think I can describe but not share images I won't have time to dig in until maybe the weekend But my first impression of the environment is that it is very much like Baldur's Gate 3 except the character and...

    D&D 5E (2024) Flanking no more in D&D 2024?

Considering that it was a fairly popular optional rule, I just don't see why they'd eliminate it as a optional rule.

    D&D 5E (2024) Flanking no more in D&D 2024?

2014 handbook fits about 840 words average per page and 2024 fits about 720 words. Based on this, 2024 word count is about 96% of 2014 edition. I do agree that the 2024 books are not overpriced. But I feel like they keep overhyping the page count of the 2024 books as being the "biggest ever"...

    D&D 5E (2024) Flanking no more in D&D 2024?

The font is bigger and there's more art. The 2024 PHB has more pages but fewer words than the 2014 PHB.

D&D General You Can Now Make Greyhawk Stuff On DM's Guild!

The 30% OBS/ 20% WotC is from a Keith Baker blog post about DMsGuild royalty structures. It's a reasonable assumption that he knows the breakdown given his connections, although it's true that neither OBS/Roll20 or WotC has publicly provided that breakdown. It also makes sense in that as you...
