    D&D 5E (2014) Letting Char-Gen Influence Race Concept

I had a thread running here a while ago, about character generation and random race selection and random ability score generation. I think that a lot of the problems arise from the fact that you can pick what race you play :) Indeed, I have my players roll their race, and then roll their ability...

D&D 5E (2014) When PCs Burst into a Room of Unsuspecting Enemies

Like most people here, I would rule that the PCs get a suprise round, and that the PCs are located outside the room when the surprise round starts. I.e. "the door busts open, and... what do you do? You have surprise, and you have one round of actions to act before the enemies join the battle."...

    D&D 5E (2014) Red Hand of Doom

I plan on playing a modified version of RHoD where humanoids, disciples of the old god of creation itself, will be back to conquer the vale (a different vale, but the concept remains the same). What I love about RHoD is the cast of characters; the steady advance of enemies putting a concrete...

D&D 5E (2014) EXP options That we use.

I haven't read through the thread beyond the first few posts, but here are my thoughts. I would try to talk to your group about experience points and why they dislike the DM simply telling them when to level up, for example once every few game sessions. I think that's the best solution -...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's wrong with a human-centric fantasy world?

In my upcoming campaign, races are all human derivatives. They work similarly to the PHB races, give or take 1-2 abilities in each case (most don't have darkvision). They look like the different human races you might expect: viking, native american, persian, oriental, black african, etc... Each...

    D&D 5E (2014) 101 Mercenary missions

A paladin has fallen from grace after profanating a temple to his god. The temple hires you on a mission: go kill him. No one must know about this. What the PCs don't know, is that the paladin fell in love with an acolyte of the temple, and the cleric killed the acolyte for desobeying his vows...

D&D 5E (2014) Lethality in 5e: what is your preference and how do you achieve it?

Very interesting point about the gaming groups and rule systems tending towards a middle ground. I guess the point is that the middle ground offers some sense of suspense, where no one knows if their PC is going to die; while actually not killing PCs all that often. Perhaps this is what most...

    D&D 5E (2014) Grappling - What am I missing?

Perhaps then rename "grapple" to "grab", and have the "grappler feat" be necessary to actually "grapple" anyone. And perhaps allow anyone without the grappler feat be able to grapple (per the grappler feat) an opponent, however with disadvantage. Would that make more sense to you?

D&D 5E (2014) Again the Banishment spell ruined my game !

A thought, upon thinking about this topic: if any spellcaster PC can cast banishment easily on an enemy cleric with basic spell components, then the opposite should be true. Opponent spellcasters should be able to banish the PC cleric easily. No?

    D&D 5E (2014) Why should I allow Multiclassing ?

I haven't read beyond page 1 of this thread, and in answer to the OP's question, I'd suggest that min-maxing isnt about multiclassing. Min-maxing is a state of mind, a way to approach the game. If you remove one option from the game (multiclassing), min-maxers will look to other alternatives to...

D&D 5E (2014) Again the Banishment spell ruined my game !

This said, I think that "sulfur" is probably not distasteful to most people. I think that to use banishment on a cleric, one would need to either find something that is personally distasteful to that cleric (e.g. through prior investigation); or to find something that is clearly distasteful to...

D&D 5E (2014) Again the Banishment spell ruined my game !

Yeah, one of the best and most epic fights in a D&D game I DMed, was when the PCs travelled back in time to get an item that was owned by a marilith. After an entire adventure, the confrontation with the marilith ended on the first attack, as the fighter with an axe of sharpness won initiative...

Cool suggestions. Gets my imagination working. Anyone who is inspired, don't hesitate to post more suggestions! (With thanks!)

D&D 5E (2014) Looking for cool evil grunts

In an upcoming campaign loosely based on The Red Hand of Doom, I wish to present players with an army of evil foes, but I feel that goblins and hobgoblins, and also orcs, are getting really old. I'd like to set up an army that has somewhat original, or at the very least unusual, evil grunts...

D&D 5E (2014) Increasing the power of spells?

I like for spellcasters to be powerful. I'm fine that martial types do not compete, damage-wise, with spellcasters. I was thinking about perhaps increasing the power of spellcasters a bit. One idea that came to mind, is to have a 1-round delay for any saving throw on a spell that affects a...

D&D 5E (2014) My group is questioning everyone.

I'm a proponent of good-aligned PCs knocking out instead of killing. And I'm a proponent of RP over rolling ability checks. But if the intent is to avoid having to role-play interrogations, you could skip the role-play in those circumstances and ask your players to use intimidate vs a secret...

    D&D 5E (2014) Resisted skill checks !!!

It's up to me as DM to be persuasive enough to intimidate the player, so that his PC will in turn be intimidated. I don't have players roll, say, a wisdom save vs an intimidation attempt, and then declare that his PC is intimidated. I feel that being intimidated is up to the player to decide. If...

    D&D 5E (2014) Alternate ability generation rule

I think, in the end, the question I wish to tackle with ability scores is: what represents a formidable ability score? How strong is 18 STR? Is it your run-of-the-mill fighter PC, or is it a rare and extraordinary feat to have 18? If 18 (and 20 by the time you have had a couple of ability...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

Question: how does the wizard fare at mid/high level? I'm curious, because I recall in 1E, the wizard was a really (I mean, really) lousy party member at very low level. You had no spell bonuses for wizards back then, so you had a 1-daily spell wizard at level 1. Assuming you had your magic...
