D&D 5E (2014) What armor can druids wear? Is there a way to get a decent AC?

On a side note, the "feel free to houserule" way of saying "I'm right because I follow the Rules as Written and you're wrong because you're not" is annoying. Everyone here is trying to simply have a discussion about an unclear spell description - at least I am. Please be open-minded enough to...

D&D 5E (2014) What armor can druids wear? Is there a way to get a decent AC?

I brought up the AC chart for armor to illustrate that all armors provide a numeric AC value (e.g. 11 for leather) to which the DEX modifier is added. I was saying that, likewise, barkskin could be interpreted as written, to provide a minimum AC value that replaces the armor's AC value. The...

D&D 5E (2014) What armor can druids wear? Is there a way to get a decent AC?

I do not advocate that barkskin is similar to chainmail. There is nothing in the text that says so. The only similarity between the two is that barkskin provides the same minimum AC value than the AC value that chainmail provides, 16.

D&D 5E (2014) What armor can druids wear? Is there a way to get a decent AC?

Why assume that barkskin functions like armor at all? It is neither light nor heavy armor. It seems to me like barkskin supercedes the numeric armor value for AC calculation, if the armor provides AC < 16, but it doesn't function like armor. I see nothing in the barkskin that suggests that it...

D&D 5E (2014) What armor can druids wear? Is there a way to get a decent AC?

Also, in the armor table, armors set a numeric value to AC, plus a possible DEX modifier. It seems to me like setting a mininum AC value to barkskin, to replace the armor's numeric AC value in the armor table, is also reasonable. Again, DEX mods, shield and cover would stack with this numeric...

D&D 5E (2014) What armor can druids wear? Is there a way to get a decent AC?

Both points of view in this thread have some value, but I find that the idea that barkskin sets a minimum of 16 regardless of any and all bonuses and circumstances, is probably not supported. I think DEFCON has it right, mostly. Barksin: You touch a willing creature. Until the spell ends, the...

D&D 5E (2014) The Illusion of Experience Points that Everyone Disbelieves

Well I gotta go out there and buy myself a lottery ticked, WotC addresses my very concern shortly after I verbalize here. It seems like an XP game will not be the default assumption anymore.

D&D 5E (2014) The Illusion of Experience Points that Everyone Disbelieves

More good insight on XPs and how people see them. I'll note, firstly, that I do not advocate complete removal of XPs in 5E. I'm just saying, don't push them as the default assumption. For those that want to use them, a simple system could be contemplated, for example: XP = monster level X 100...

D&D 5E (2014) The Illusion of Experience Points that Everyone Disbelieves

Thanks to all those that took time to reply. Interesting points all across. I agree that playstyle has a lot to do with my OP. The recent 3E and 4E commercial adventures that I've read, had exclusively level-dependent challenges. Which doesn't mean that all 3E and 4E players have...

D&D 5E (2014) The Illusion of Experience Points that Everyone Disbelieves

Your system to calculate the difficulty of a challenge, appears to me to be level dependent, and not linked to how many XP they have. I.e. you mention that your challenges are calculated with respect to the PC's level. I do not argue that level-dependent challenges (be they same level, or above...

    D&D 5E (2014) Does D&D Next need +2/-2 modifiers?

I like simple. I like rolling dice. Adv/dis is a great rule for those that like those things, like me. Some people want a more "realistic" model, with more granularity, for bonuses/penalties. Fair enough. Myself, I find that too complex for a same in-game result. Think about the following...

D&D 5E (2014) The Illusion of Experience Points that Everyone Disbelieves

I disagree that "it's the norm" should be taken as granted. D&D 3E and 4E WOTC commercial adventures expect specific level advancement rates. Use of XPs in such a case probably only allows players to know how far they are from advancing to the next level, that they're going to reach at a...

Agreed, pre-3E had a lot of variability in PC levels in a same gaming group. Good point. I think however that my post remains relevant towards D&D Next and based on 3E + experience.

    Cooperative World Building Rules?

To quote me: :) (Emphasis mine.) I've edited my thread title and first post to clarify what I'm looking for, apparently my previous title misguided people to link me to generic world-building tips or resources. I thank all posters nonetheless, but again I'm looking for rules that would allow...

D&D 5E (2014) The Illusion of Experience Points that Everyone Disbelieves

(This thread was inspired by the recent poll on use of experience points.) What is the purpose of experience points? They measure and calibrate the advancement in the stepped power curve that are PC levels, over time. The PC levels in turn give access to new powers and give the player the...

    Cooperative World Building Rules?

Thanks for the replies. To be clear, since some posters provide links or recommendations for world building in general: I'm looking for rules that make world-building a cooperative game. I'm not simply looking to build a world (I've done that a couple times - and although I'm sure I can still...

    13th Age pros and cons?

Cool stuff guys. I'll most certainly buy the book and see where I go from there.

    Cooperative World Building Rules?

Thanks. The PDF you linked to is interesting, and certainly along the lines of what I'm looking for. (And I'm also thinking about 13th Age for the gameplay ruleset, but it is much too early to decide.)

    Cooperative World Building Rules?

Hello, I'm slowly starting to plan my next campaign as GM, in a couple years. We're starting a new one with another GM now, so I have time :) One aspect that I'd like to introduce is cooperative world building rules where players get to build parts of the world/universe, but at least some...
