    13th Age pros and cons?

Thanks! What is the average duration of a combat for your group, realistically? When you say no grid, do you still use minis? Thanks!

    13th Age pros and cons?

Thanks for yet more replies. The cooperative storytelling is very appealing to me. I like games to include some rules in that respect, that goes beyond allowing rolling a die (which, to me, is not storytelling, it's rolling a die). So what is hinted at above allowing a player to trade icon...

    13th Age pros and cons?

Ok thanks again for all the posts. To the question: what type of spells do I have in mind? The answer is: 1E spells (or the like, DCC, etc...) that are open-ended. One of my gripes with 4E was the disappearance of magic. I think all the above answers pretty much all of my questions. The next...

D&D 3.x Your take on Mirror Image, 3.0 or 3.5

If this is the only reason, then rule that the images can't be defeated by closing your eyes. I.e., the illusion is better than that. If you need a reason: if the illusion is only visual with no other component to it, you should allow perception checks to see if the image marks the dust on the...

    13th Age pros and cons?

Hmm, this sounds a lot like 4E to me. Don't get me wrong, I love the 4E power system. It's great. A wonderful innovation (as far as i know) and a great addition to the RPG scene. It brought excellent combat options for all classes. But there was a price to pay: spells disappeared, and wizards...

    13th Age pros and cons?

Groovy stuff here. At the risk of repeating myself, thank you to everyone for writing this down. A few posts got me thinking or even smiling (I like the detailed combat description - this is indeed just like my group). I've taken a look at the SRD - didn't realize they had opened up the rules...

    13th Age pros and cons?

Wow, nice reviews, thanks to everyone for taking the time to write. Many of the points that are raised in this thread are really relevant to me; the story-driven character creation probably at the front of these. Specific questions in no particular order, if I may: 1) Realistic time for one...

D&D 5E (2014) Do You Think Spare the Dying is a Problem?

So essentially, what people are saying against this cantrip, is : 1) that a cleric standing next to a dying character should not be able to heal him up to 1 HP at all? 2) Or, that a cleric a cleric standing next to a dying character should not be able to heal him up to 1 HP by using only a...

    13th Age pros and cons?

Hi, I've been reading a bit about 13th Age and it seems like an interesting game/setting. I'm considering buying the core rulebook. I'd like to read your thoughts, you that have actually played the game. Tell me what you like and what you didn't like, and how that materialized in your game...

Beyond Old and New School - "The Secret That Was Lost"

I like the OP's essay. Very interesting read. I generally agree on the question of imagination, or degradation thereof, as being a result of a game (or the world) leaving less open space for the mind to expand into. Has something "been lost" in RPGs? If so, is it imagination? Shove an OD&D...

    The silver standard?

I vote for silver standard. Gold becomes rare(r) and cool. Flashing a gold coin at someone to bride him means something. And, as someone else pointed out, silver and copper become useless beyond level 1 if gold is the standard, so toning down the standard markes sense.

    HP Thresholds

Although the mechanica on limiting the usefulness of weaker spells is interesting, I don't like that the spells require PCs to determine how many hit points a target has. - So, says Luther the Mage, how many hit points to you think this orc has? - Hit what?, replies Redgut the dwarf.

    Awfully Alarmed About Armour

I would like to see heavy armor give damage reduction against specific types of attacks (probably at least melee attacks, maybe others - this would need to be tweaked for game balance). Of course, simplicity would need to be balanced here too.

    AoO and "circling"

To the OP's question, I think a new mechanic should be tried out in D&Dn instead of OAs. This mechanic is too burdensome. So my answer is neither yes or no, since I don't like for creatures to be able to move around freely; but I think control zones should somehow be part of the game. And not...

13th Age Discussion: A Love Letter to The Best Parts of D&D

Thanks for taking the time to write this down, Isaac Chalk. I've read your posts with curiosity as I'm looking forward to hearing about this game a bit more. I just bought DCC myself and I'm happy to try new game systems. This being said, here are a few comments on your posts, specifically (not...

What does a paladin do (or should be doing)?

You also start with mechanics, to then finally evoque fluff. I disagree with this approach. A paladin is not one of the nine boxes in a tic tac toe game that needs to be filled. RPGs need a soul to be interesting. Why is Call of Cthulhu interesting? It has little to do with its mechanics...

    Level 0 rules

DCC for the win! :) I just bought the book and need to go pick it up at the post office now. The level 0 idea is cool.
