Will the real Mike Mearls please stand up?

To the OP: don't be a rules-lawyer about other people's posts. Take the entirety of what he's said and done, if you wish to judge him, not two phrases out of a decade of posts.

What does a paladin do (or should be doing)?

I have the impression that you start with mechanics, and then end up tagging the fluff as an afterthought. I think that any class design should be done opposite. Start with an idea, a concept, and then find a way to have it work mechanically. Paladins are holy warriors dedicated to a religious...

    Familiars

I've played a wizard in 1E and the problem with my familiar was keeping it alive. And the reason for that is simple: AoE spells. If you allow animals into any PC's entourage, you need to find a way to have them survive. The immortal-"normal animal" rule you suggest appears contradictory to me...

Reasons to have paladins and rangers as classes

Haven't read the entire thread, but... Rangers and paladins could (and will hopefully) have unique features too, not accessible by theme or background.

    Awfully Alarmed About Armour

I hope for damage reduction with heavy armor, and perhaps some with medium armor also. As a second point, I'd probably limit the DR to weapon attacks only, but of course that would increase the power of spellcasters, so it would have to be taken into account when designing classes.

    Monte on Logic in RPGs

I agree with Monte, but I'd like to add that the argument about tight rules helping bad DMs do an OK job, is a theoretical one that I still haven't actually seen applied in practice. I think that tight rules don't help bad DMs, no more than loose rules do. Tight rules with a bad DM requires a...

Playtest report - can 22 goblins defeat alcohol?

Haha, I so relate to this. I loved reading this report. I'm really looking forward to the next antics by the drunken party that do weird stuff :)

    True Damage: An Alternative?

I like this idea. I think that creatures or situations (helpless) targetting wound points specifically should be very rare.

In the heat of battle, is hit point loss a wound?

You know, an early hit could mean a wound and a later hit could mean loss of endurance/luck. 4E brought the concept that, whatever the earlier hits were (you deicde), the last one hurts that's for sure.

    Active and Passive Perception

    Yep, sounds good.

    Active and Passive Perception

Based on my Warhammer RPG experience, and to build on the OP's suggestion, you could have two different skills: 1) perception (more in the sense of spot or hear something): this is a WIS-based skill 2) search (as in the PC spends time going through things, probably more methodically): this is...

    Abstract long rests

I find surprising that this discussion almost systematically ignores the starting hit points and number of hit points gained per level. To me, the quantity of HPs that can be healed per long rest (or short rest, but this thread is not about that) should ALWAYS be evaluated relative to your total...

    More concerns over hit points

Your barbarian will be like any other barbarian mechanically. Nothing to remember him by. Isn't that a shame? Wouldn't you rather have a barbarian who is one heck of a badass because he has so much more HPs than any other? Or, even if he has few HPs, wouldn't you even prefer to be that barbarian...

Spells that should be rituals or cantrips.

Good thread idea, and I agree with the OP's suggestions. (Can't XP.)

Why I Think Rolling For Hit Points is a Bad Thing

Actually, the entire point you made about the bell curve applying to ability scores, applies to hit points as you level up. I also agree with another poster who mentions that everyone having the same HPs is boring. I like seeing characters with important HP variations. Where I do agree with...

    Ability Scores

I prefer a more important mechanical difference between a 7 and an 18 as per 3E/4E than a trivial difference in AD&D. Take STR for example: if you've ever arm-wrestled with friends, you know that the stronger one pretty much always win. A difference between any two persons, even if they both are...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Art Column Discussion: May

I've actually used the Fallcrest image to show my players what Cauldron looks like (from the Shackled City adventure path). The sloping streets and tight building placement seem appropriate.

    A Hope: Return Variability/Randomness

One problem I see with 4E (sorry to come back to this one - I still play it and like it, but it's kind of an extreme in some respects so it makes for a good example), is how predictable the system is. In a game I'm DMing presently, all PCs at level 5 are within a 10% variation in HPs at most...

    A Hope: Return Variability/Randomness

No support for random HP or ability scores? I'm surprised. I really wish for those to return, with point buy being an option only. The disappearance of randomness resulted in PCs of a given class being all the same, except where sub-choices in that class exist, in which case all sub-choices are...

    Write this game for adults

Jerry Seinfeld, when asked how he managed to make his TV show so popular for years, said: "I start on the assumption that my audience is intelligent." I understand what you mean and somewhat agree. Using language that speaks to an intelligent reader is perhaps the key. (I'm not sure that...
