    Return of the Bard

Okay, in re-reading I can see that you were meaning to derive from the 1E bard towards the celtic one. I can't say it was crystal clear, though. Anyway, like I said I like your take on the celtic bard. As you mention, it's pretty close to a warlord, so if the warlord makes another appearance...

    Return of the Bard

To the OP: nice description of the Skald-type bard, it indeed looks like a bunch of fun when worded that way. (Although, as noted above, it's not the 1E bard.)

What is a rogue to you?

Couldn't a thief stab an unsuspecting victim in the gut? Why only the back? Couldn't a thief decide that he's not cleptomaniac? Couldn't a thief decide that sneaking alone into any unauthorized area is too risky and he would rather just bluff his way in? You describe your way of playing the...

    The defender's masochism

I agree it's a tough call. I haven't personally bought into the marking system and don't find it fun, realistic (or whatever word you wish to use here) or a compelling game mechanic. I know that opinions diverge on this.

    The defender's masochism

In fact, the fighter doesn't want to be hit; he wants to be attacked. But otherwise, I hear you.

    The defender's masochism

Here are a few thoughts after having read through all posts that were made since yesterday. First off, thank you to everyone for participating in this discussion. The different viewpoints are enlightening, in addition to being made in a very civil manner. Great discussion! Also, sorry for...

    The defender's masochism

Can't XP you, but this is also what I think.

    Interesting point.

    The defender's masochism

Still can't XP you, but the move/attack breakdown is also a good idea.

    The defender's masochism

Can't XP you, but I feel this makes much sense to me.

    The defender's masochism

The military formation example (taken by many posters here) is different: it relies on men physically forming a wall of protection preventing passage of enemies to the squishies. The D&D equivalent woiuld be to have a party large enough to have "defenders" stand in a line of adjacent squares so...

    The defender's masochism

Are you sure that your example is extreme enough to carry over your point? ;)

    The defender's masochism

Most of you say essentially the following: There's a difference if you want, but knowing that the base premise in a battle is that two teams (the "PCs" and the "monsters") are attacking each other until one slays the other, saying "don't attack my friends" is equivalent to saying "attack me"...

    The defender's masochism

This is like saying: I'm not rich, it's the others that are poor. This is also related to the illusion that not giving ability score penalties, and only bonuses, changes anything. Being rich only exists as a relative comparison of wealth, it doesn't exist in a vaccuum. Ability score penalties...

    PHB Length and Contents

I'd like to have one PHB per player at my table. Easier to look up rules. Oh wait, the question said how long, not how many...

    The defender's masochism

4E (and MMOs and other RPGs before 4E) has brought the concept of the defender (tank) wanting to attract opponents to attack him. This basic concept if fully comprenhensible when you think about the mechanical stats of the game: the fighter has a high AC and plenty of hit points. In 4E the game...
