D&D 5E (2014) Ditching concentration - did you do it?

Hi :) I know this topic has been discussed before and my intent is not to discuss whether ditching concentration is a good idea or not, so please refrain from doing so here. I also recognize that many players here would not like such a house rule, and this is fine. I'm considering a bunch of...

D&D 5E (2014) Favorite method of generating ability scores

I answered 3d6, but it's in fact: - Player rolls 2 arrays of 3d6 in order, and selects one. - Player asssigns 14 to one stat.

D&D 5E (2014) Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

So... I get that removing/limiting cantrips is something that changes game balance. Just so we're clear :) I also get that to many people this is a change they'd rather not see in a game they play in. Fair enough. I still appreciate this having been expressed in this thread, because the same...

D&D 5E (2014) Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

I'm somewhat surprised that many people seem to want to convince me not to do this :) I understand that rules balance and all. Just toying around with ideas, to get the flavor I hope to achieve.

D&D 5E (2014) Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

This thread is partly derailing from the original intent, but I appreciate the input nonetheless. All comments are interesting and making me consider what approach I wish to have to my campaign. As a side note, when I'm saying I want magic to be scarce, perhaps I'm putting too much emphasis, in...

    D&D 5E (2014) KO and Death Saves

Good question. For NPCs, probably not, because there are no death saves. Depending on the gaming situation, I'd probably have the NPC wake up a few rounds later. For PCs, I'd probably allow it.

D&D 5E (2014) Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

With this said... has anyone toyed with the idea of a very limited use of cantrips, for example 10 or less per long rest?

D&D 5E (2014) Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

Interesting points. So, with only conceptual limitations, how about I mention to the players the following: you have about X spell slots for your cantrips. We won't be keeping track of those uses, unless you're spamming them and I consider you're close to hitting your limits, at which point...

D&D 5E (2014) Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

I'm A Banana and bedir than: thanks for the suggestions. bedir than: do I understand that a level 7 wizard with 16 INT (+3) would get 10 uses of each cantrip, per day? Does that really limit use of cantrips? To both of you, and others: do you find that having super large amounts of...

D&D 5E (2014) Limiting use of cantrips - what are the consequences?

Pursuant to another idea I posted here about increasing spell power by toying with the save-each-round mechanic for ongoing spell effects (such as paralysis), namely reducing the number of saves one gets, I'm now thinking about cantrips. More particularly, the flavor of unlimited cantrips is not...

D&D 5E (2014) Arcane Rules- What is your favorite "hidden" rule in 5e?

Some animals now have an intelligence score of 3, i.e. the same than the lowest score that humanoids can have. Some animals have an intelligence score of 2, like in the days of old. Some animals now have an intelligence score of 1. Most insects and reptiles fall in this category. Wolves...

    D&D 5E (2014) Most annoying / awesome magic items

I'll sign up for the Wand of Wonder. Back in our old AD&D campaign, that was a well of storytelling. Battle is not going as intended - or is easy and needs some spice... Whip out the wand of wonder! In a similar vein, the bag of tricks - is that what's it's called? The bag from which you'll...

    D&D 5E (2014) Most annoying / awesome magic items

I like that you hate the item that avoids you having to keep track of food, but you love the item that avoids you having to keep track of emcumbrance. Apparent contradiction aside, you're all about paperwork, aren't you? :)

    Alternate Ranger (simple)

Thanks for the comments and shares, and for the discussion. As concerns the two ranger fixes proposed in the UA articles: I find the first fix to bring the ranger a bit too close to the fighter, with the manoeuvers. I like that the fighter has exclusivity over that interesting mechanic and I...

    Alternate Ranger (simple)

Chalk me in as another player dissatisfied with the PHB ranger. My main gripe is the flavor: I would prefer a non-spellcasting ranger. I also think that the beast companion limitations are clonky and make little sense: the beast companion won't attack on most rounds. Weird. The unearthed arcana...

    D&D 5E (2014) Increasing spell power

Wolf118 Cool! How did you accomplish this search, out of curiosity? I.e. was there an automated tool that allowed you to do this search, or did you scan the spell list in alphabetical order and note the spells one by one? (I was trying to avoid the latter myself...)
