Homebrew Do people in your game world put cheese on their apple pies??

I had a witch give the party cucumber sandwiches, which they enjoyed. Until she mentioned that they where sentient cucumbers.

D&D's Obelisk Plotline Was Supposed to Be Resolved in Vecna: Eve of Ruin

I don't work from a master plan - creativity doesn't work that way - and I don't expect it from others. Clearly Perkins started dropping in the obelisks with only a vague idea of doing something with them down the line (and at a time when it was far from certain 5e would be successful). By the...

D&D's Obelisk Plotline Was Supposed to Be Resolved in Vecna: Eve of Ruin

Nah, Vecna can't do comedy. Strahd is Skeletor.

Why aren't megacorps as big a part of Steampunk as they are of Cyberpunk?

Good list, but I would add "a culture of deference to the monarch".

Homebrew Do people in your game world put cheese on their apple pies??

Its not something I've ever heard of, but its a good example of how idiosyncratic regional food variations can be*. I remember how surprised my partner (from London) was to discover that in Northern England cheese (preferably Wensleydale) is eaten with Christmas cake/fruit cake. And of course...

D&D 5E (2024) Pact of the Chain + Nick Mastery

RAW is important to some people, and switching nick’s off hand weapon attack for anything else is definitely not RAW. But for myself I agree with you, the sort of player who would even think you could get away with it is not the sort of player who would be welcome at my table.

D&D General D&D Archetypes that spread out to other settings and media

Conan wasn't created in a vacuum. REH was very much influenced by Edgar Rice Burroughs, and Tarzan (who had been in a couple of successful movies by the time Conan was written) was very much averse to wearing a shirt.

    D&D 5E (2024) What Is 2026's Big Adventure

Given what we have been told about the Vecna product - that Perkins completely stopped working on it when his job changed - it seems likely that the same thing happened to the Thay adventure, which I think was also a Perkins project.

    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

The comparison isn't with other tabletop games. D&D needs to compete with all games if it is to grow rather than shrink as older tabletop gamers die off. Snakes and Ladders has a lot more players than D&D.

D&D's Obelisk Plotline Was Supposed to Be Resolved in Vecna: Eve of Ruin

Certainly this is a better idea. Perkins’ original plot was bad. What replaced it was bad. And the main problem was the selection of Vecna as the villain. A boring one-note antagonist that existed only in the backstory of some magic items and is strongly associated with the Greyhawk setting.

D&D 5E (2024) Pact of the Chain + Nick Mastery

The rules are pretty clear in this case though. Nick does not grant you an extra Attack in the game rules sense (unlike haste). It removes the bonus action cost of attacking with an off hand weapon. It’s not an exploit, it’s just a clearly incorrect interpretation of the rules. It's equivalent...

What are you reading in 2026?

Even good translations miss things. It maybe that in the original sense “koto string” referred to the type of string used to string a koto. Not an actual string from a koto. NB Google Translate translate’s koto as “thing”.

D&D 5E (2024) Pact of the Chain + Nick Mastery

I would have to say “no” to that. Nick turns a bonus action attack with an off hand weapon into part of an attack action. If you don’t use it to attack with an off hand weapon Nick does nothing.

D&D General D&D Archetypes that spread out to other settings and media

Interesting thing about Conan is the 2H sword comes from the cover art and the movies. In the original novels his sword is sometimes described as a scimitar if it’s described at all, he sometimes wears armour, and sometimes uses a shield. But the reason you can’t find a “definitive” source it’s...

D&D General D&D Archetypes that spread out to other settings and media

We had the like of the 1950s British TV series The Adventures of Sir Lancelot using sword and board. That archetype was undoubtedly around long before D&D.

    Your most pointless TV/movie/book nitpicks

The English establishment ultimately derives its authority from the Norman regime, hence the ongoing attempts to suggest that William the Genocidal Dictator was really quite a nice guy who brought good government to those chaotic Saxons.
