D&D General D&D Archetypes that spread out to other settings and media

One example in history of literal sword and board fighting as standard (as opposed to the sword being a secondary weapon for a mounted knight) were the highlanders of the Jacobite rebellion (1745). So that would be my ancestors! Basket hilted highland broadsword and targe to be specific.

    D&D 5E (2024) Cleave+GWM Feat

As worded, the cleave affect does not need to happen immediately, so I guess you could do the hew then do the cleave? Or two cleaves, as the hew should trigger another one? But related to the original question, the bonus action hew could occur during an attack action. e.g. character with two...

And most regular Saxons would have used axe and shield, but the shield is the unifying factor. You could argue that sword and board was uncommon because swords were uncommon (Roman gladius being something of an exception), but everyone had a board.

    D&D 5E (2024) Cleave+GWM Feat

When it comes to the "Hew" part of GWM, how immediate is immediate? If I score a crit and then make a cleave attack does it prevent a bonus action hew attack? I notice that a hew attack can trigger a cleave attack, which could be against the target that triggered the hew.

D&D General Thoughts on New Artificer Subclasses from Exploring Eberron (D&D Beyond)

I don't think there is anyone who wouldn't share that opinion! Make stuff for other PCs to use and role play as a comic relief sidekick. Someone cast Lesser Restoration the other day. First time in 10 years.

    Spoilers Civil War Movie

I think that, from the 60s to the 90s, there was significantly more freedom in war reporting, but prior to the 60s is was very heavily controlled by the state.

The novels were a mistake and a dead end that WotC is not going down. Trying to force people to buy terrible slop in order to keep up with canon was both deeply immoral, and eventually self-defeating as the massive weight of canon became too much for anyone to keep track of. However settings may...

It’s comparable to the extra attack granted by Nick, which also omits the ability bonus (unless).

    D&D 5E (2024) Cleave+GWM Feat

The wording of cleave is vague - it says it does the weapon’s damage, which suggests “only” but only specifically excludes damage from the ability score. However GWM seems pretty clear that it only does the extra damage once, so you could only use it on the cleave if you didn’t use it on the...

D&D General D&D Archetypes that spread out to other settings and media

Any RL Anglo-Saxon warrior would have carried a shield, as the shield wall was their standard tactic. The idea that you didn’t have one would have seemed very strange to them. (NB longbowmen came later).

    D&D General Which Sci-Fi 5e Variant?

It's a good question. The is a Traveller 5e coming soon. Dunno if that will take gameplay in a less grounded (i.e. more space opera action) direction. The only one I've read is Esper Genesis, and I thought that was a bit too far out and fantasyish for my tastes. I've been intending to check out...

But that's using something for a purpose it was not intended for. If you use something incorrectly, it's you fault if it breaks, not the manufacturers.

What Geek Media Do You Refuse To Partake In?

That's a matter of writing, not acting. And in a visual medium you can leave things for the audience to deduce, not everything has to be spelled out. It's entirely understandable that Holmes should become frustrated in explaining every little thing to someone who should be able to work it out...

What Geek Media Do You Refuse To Partake In?

The ability to correlate information and recognise patterns does not require you to first stuff your brain with huge amounts of information. If you think it’s an ability specific to the medical profession, then you have already failed to understand how it works. It’s something people start to...

It not specifically “diagnostic skills” it’s any form of problem solving or critical thinking, and it’s certainly true that it’s not taught anying like enough in schools, although it also helps to have some inherent aptitude. If you couldn’t do it at 18 then I’m glad you aren’t my doctor...

What videogames are you playing in 2026?

The camera is similar to other games, I guess if you have played those you have learned the skill of controlling it. If you haven’t you are likely to struggle at least at first. But it’s certainly true that the camera in NWN and its sequel was far worse.

Because he is angry that he is being forced to do things he is bad at by a stupid system. But a doctor who is polite to everyone and kills their patients with incorrect diagnosis is a good doctor?! Yup. Frankly the vast majority of doctors are rubbish at diagnosing anything remotely rare or...
