    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

I’m not talking about my circle. As a school teacher (and someone with other hobbies) I come into contact with quite a lot of people who play D&D who are not part of my own group. You may not believe me, but your bubble of D&D players who play AL is a tiny hardcore. There are lots of normal...

D&D General D&D Archetypes that spread out to other settings and media

I believe D&D orcs were first green in the 2nd edition monster manual 1993. Warcraft came out in 94. However, Warcraft was an unlicensed Warhammer game, and Warhammer had green orcs since the early 80s, and is almost certainly the original source for the green WoW orc look. There is the slight...

    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

I don’t know of anyone who would touch AL with a bargepole. It’s sen as too hardcore by people who don’t want to be told off for not knowing all the rules. I do know that many FLGs have an (unfair) unsavoury reputation. There has been an increase in games cafes since the pandemic, which smuggle...

D&D General D&D Archetypes that spread out to other settings and media

Not really. It’s just German for “creature” and in the TV show is used to describe a lot of things, only some of which resemble D&D shifters, and are actually inspired by werewolf mythology and related myths. Also see Wulver in Shetland folk tales.

A capybara is already a dire guinea pig, which is a dire miniature giant space hamster, so that would be a dire dire dire hamster. And have you noticed that capybaras are everywhere all of a sudden?

    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

People who turn up to such events are very self-selecting to be hardcore serious tabletop gamers. The mass market is made up of people who wouldn't be seen dead at a FLGs (even if they had one, most people don't).

    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

Daggerheart is very much the direction of the mass market, and therefore the direction WotC have to follow. If WotC had put it out instead of a smaller company it’s what everyone would be playing now. Simple loose rules, with the emphasis on story and role play is what the mass market wants...

Sure, I've already seen 6e, and it's called Daggerheart.

It’s a major criticism of the MCU movies that they have largely focused on “fun action adventure” and ignored a lot of the depth of the source material.

    D&D 5E (2014) Official WotC 5e pdfs

Yup "particularly recommended" is much stronger wording than "suggested" or "you might want to". It's basically saying only start at level 1 if you have inexperienced players.

The majority of them haven't been. Nor are the majority of comics for that matter.

Lord Vader finds your lack of faith disturbing. Star Wars was probably as big an influence on Dragonlance as Tolkien was. But the general point is that none of this stuff happens in a cultural vacuum. D&D is in a constant dialogue with popular culture.

That's another one that can be connected to BG2! After being the breakout stars of the Planescape setting, I think BG2 featured the first official siting of a Tiefling in the FR (although they were a traveller from Sigil).

D&D General D&D Archetypes that spread out to other settings and media

Dragonlance was itself influenced by some depictions of gnomes and little people in pop culture and folk tales (leprechaun shoemakers, Santa's toymakers), so it didn't come completely out of the blue, and I expect it found traction because when introduced in 1st edition gnomes didn't have much...

My partner is a great believer in choosing TV shows based on the acting ability of the cast, rather than the genre.

It’s not a case of reading spoilers, the headlines of the reviews from leading British newspapers like the Guardian indicated the nature of the show (whist singing its praises). Not fans, not toxic, just professional journalists and critics.

    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

The biggest challenge the 2024 rules faced is that most players were happy enough with the 2014 rules. There certainly isn’t a demand for rules that are more different to the 2014 rules.

    D&D 5E (2024) Predict WotC's 2026 D&D releases

They do, but their press release specifically stated that this is a new adventure. I wouldn’t think they would do it unless they had good reason to believe the new adventure was a safe bet though. And the closest thing to a safe bet I can think of is a CoS sequel.
