That is not at all true. There we debates and debates on these very websites over whether or not all the data showing PF as #1 were valid or not. It was only after 5E was announced that those debates became moot and went away.

I think 5E is the most readily "house-ruleable" version of D&D. And, really, they are all very easy to modify. But 5E feels almost like it has perforations and notched edges. It wants to be customized. It is the lego set of D&D. And I mean that in a 100% good way.
