TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Tables are even easier. I have a fourth-level Samurai. Fights as a fighter of equal level. The player rolls a 14. I look at my table And I know that a 14 will hit an AC of 8 or better. ^^^^ This.

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

Ah, I think I mis-read. Yeah, I know, someone admitted they were wrong on the Interweb. It can happen. There. One of the reasons I pulled back species/races/classes and other stuff is that I've run a very high fantasy game. In the end, I regretted doing a few things. This time around, I want...

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

That's a broad brush. I have orcs. I even have stories of Orcish rangers working with the Allied Races during the third Hillbeast Wars. I have orcs as very culturally deep, with strong underpinnings of honour - at least in the northern subspecies. The southern orcs are having issues with a...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Played from 86-88, DMed for about five-six years; then stopped. Picked it up again last year.

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Might be an age thing, too. I grew up in the pencil-and-paper world, with memorized "six eights are forty-eight, seven eights are fifty-six, eight eights are sixty-four" world. So I've got patterns in the old neurons ...

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

Elves, dwarves, hobbits halflings, humans. Those were the original PC races. Because Tolkien. There was even a kerfuffle with Tolkien because of hobbits halflings, which caused D&D to name their hobbits, halflings. The other concepts were allowed to fly because of Nordic myth having dwarves and...

Uh... that's not what a compromise is.

Methinks you are forgetting where D&D started from - modelling Tolkien. None of those critters existed in OD&D. But races/classes and creatures were added because that's what people wanted. Part of fantasy is creating what we - as creators (ie: DMs) want to experience. If I want to experience a...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Maybe this is good old neurodivergent me, but I find it just as easy to add 15 to 8 to get 23 as it is to subtract 8 from 23 and get 15.

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

I had one-on-one "interviews" with all my players, and gave them the background, races, cultures and the like. It's very old-school races - gnome, dwarf, two flavours of elf, half-elves, elf interbreeds, and four different human cultures. That's it. But folks are having fun after a year despite...

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

Bingo. Collaboration. I didn't want subclasses, but my players did/do, and so I've created something that isn't quite a subclass but more a pathway for rangers and rogues. The suggestion my player gave didn't fit into the system (or so I thought) but I worked with the concepts and together we...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

But that removes player agency. So I roll 14 7 12 16 9 9 Won't be playing the mage I had my heart on. I'm limited to fighter, maybe a thief... but I just finished a campaign where I did that and I wanna try something else.... Solution: start with "average" values. A human in my system has...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Look-up sheets (matrixes) are nothing more than math. Once you convert the fighter-level equivalent of non-fighter classes, the math become super easy. Even now, using a "armour starts at 0 and moves up" THAC0-ish approach with 2d10 for rolls, the math is simple: [Roll]>=10+AC-FL where...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Curious why you would think adding is faster than subtracting?

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

How much of that is on you, and how much of that is on your players? I'd assume at this point your lot are quite experienced. They can help with the math ....

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

How the frig does a high level (10-ish) character only have 30 hp?

Or, alternately, if they can't generate a character whose backstory and complexity yearn for play to begin to tell a story.... I say that because I recently built a 5e character for an online Roll20/Discord game. Everything was generated from a character concept that was developed first (an...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is Point Buy Balanced?

But it did point out a certain .... unfairness, and made for a helluva time planning encounters. I do think I'd be better today as a more mature geezer, but ... let's hold onto that thought for a second. True. ^^^ That's what I had to deal with as a result of a randomly generated Glock, tho...

D&D 5E (2014) Help Me Create an Epic Final Boss Fight!

Even better - the bell works as advertised, but .... It causes a level or two of exhaustion every use. Sucks back a random 2d4 levels of spell slots. Causes a temporary loss of 2 CON points. In other words, the bell works, but it has a cost.
