Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

I played a Preserver who Defiled... and never forgave themself for it. Great bit of character story, there, where they defiled in order to save a life and take revenge on a Templar who was a major thorn in our side for months.

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

Honestly, @darjr, I wouldn't have put it past them, before now. Would explain the massive simplification of the setting, making Druids into Preservers, etc. CR and their fandom will eat that up. But the new campaign's location has already been revealed...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

A feat chain you can pick up is still a massive left turn from the default. Arcane Magic defiles. You can hold back, use some of yourself, cast carefully, and preserve. But it is supposed to defile. Arcane Magic didn't get "Stronger" because you defiled in 2e. It was just magic. It was weaker...

Dungeons & Dragons Releases New Unearthed Arcana Subclasses, Strongly Hinting at Dark Sun

So... here's my considered take: Preserver Druids are likely going to represent the entirety of the Preservers. No more difficult decision on whether to Preserve or Defile for Arcane Spellcasters. No. That would be too much power and consideration. Too many moral quandries. DRUIDS are now the...

D&D 5E (2024) When are we getting announcements for 2026 books?

I'm pretty much with @Ruin Explorer on this one. If we see Dark Sun it'll be vaguely reminiscent of the original setting with all culpability erased. They'll try to write it from the "Rewritten history" perspective of the Sorcerer Kings where there was "Something Bad" which happened to the...

Level Up (A5E) Voidrunner's codex - 'Always Prepared' Maneuver, is this a broken feature?

There is no Action Surge in A5e for a reason. The cool part of A5e is you can ask the designers. We all hang out on this forum. Maybe it was just a thoughtless carryover from WotC's design... maybe not.

Level Up (A5E) Voidrunner's codex - 'Always Prepared' Maneuver, is this a broken feature?

    1) You precast the spell. So if you don't trigger your reaction you used the spell slot. 2) You cannot concentrate on anything else. 3) If your concentration is broken you lose the spell slot and the action and cannot use the reaction. That's a LOT of additional scrutiny piled on. And you can...

Level Up (A5E) Voidrunner's codex - 'Always Prepared' Maneuver, is this a broken feature?

WHY? What is the mechanical reason to set up a set of hoops for the Fireball spell or a level 5 cantrip but not Extra Attack? I posit that it does, and it's just overlooked. It states "An Attack" as an example of a readied action. not "Extra Attack" or "The Attack Action" but "An Attack"...

Level Up (A5E) Voidrunner's codex - 'Always Prepared' Maneuver, is this a broken feature?

Just makes sense to me that you're readying an attack rather than the attack action. After all, if you ready a spell you've already cast it and you're concentrating on it until you trigger it with a reaction. That's not the normal procedure for casting a spell, why would you use the normal...

Level Up (A5E) Seed Bomb & Cobra's Spit Design

Seed Bomb lasts 1 minute with 4 bombs. You're meant to cast it out of combat, hand out bombs, then huck 'em at the start of combat to impose negative effects on your enemies. Mostly Blindness or to create Difficult Terrain, but YMMV. Maybe a 1-turn Grapple is all you really need.

3PP Release The Night of the Knife: A Campaign Quartet Adventure

Definitely leaning more Horror or at least a Gothic Darkness theme. Some core conceits we've talked about for the setting: Most of the "Actual Gods" are cosmic horrors you would never want to worship Thaera is the sun goddess. She hangs in the sky like a perpetual solar eclipse that somehow...

3PP Release The Night of the Knife: A Campaign Quartet Adventure

Plan is to release the Night of the Knife one-shot and the Campaign Quartet together. Night of the Knife is actually built around these four classes and you'll get some pregens of the iconics. Then use the money off that to do up a longer adventure path if there's enough interest.

3PP Release The Night of the Knife: A Campaign Quartet Adventure

The Inquisitor Hands of the Church, Seekers of Corruption, and Healers in Battle. Much like a rogue, inquisitors add damage to their weapon attacks. Unlike the rogue, however, the inquisitor adds half the damage dealt from castigations to their judgement pool. And from that pool they may...
