D&D General 5e System Redesign through New Classes and Setting. A Thought Experiment.

Those are good points, @Lanefan and @zakael19... my plan was just to make sure "Kill a creature" isn't one of the options. For Swordmage it's "Get hit by a spell and spend your reaction to absorb mana, then spend the mana on your turn". I feel like Crits are rare enough, and valued enough, to...

So one of the thoughts I had about the Swordmage, early on, was the motes of power mechanic to give them some uses for their reaction other than opportunity attacks. Absorbing motes in order to spend them on bonuses to saves or AC is a pretty classic structure. But I'm also looking at, late...

3PP Release The Night of the Knife: A Campaign Quartet Adventure

This is what you should see... maybe do a quick cache clear and redownload? Just to make certain it's the right one, I deleted the copy there, then uploaded it fresh, again. That is a big problem... I'll see what my spouse will do about it. And yeah? Pregens is a good idea. I have some built...

D&D General 5e System Redesign through New Classes and Setting. A Thought Experiment.

I don't think I wanna go -that- far... the fractal tree of 'main plot expansion' would become so byzantine as to be almost impossible to map. Especially with how little it takes for a group to get sidetracked by a red herring of their own manufacturing. But giving some guidance and a...

D&D General 5e System Redesign through New Classes and Setting. A Thought Experiment.

Hmmm... like perhaps setting up a separate section, or even small book, full of 'sideplots' suited for specific level ranges but with the NPCs and such unnamed so that if the party does get sidetracked by a specific NPC or Situation, you can snag a sideplot in the right level range with a few...

I'm talking about writing an adventure to sell to others, not just run for my own table. That's good! I'm happy there's others out there with the same kinda interests! https://www.patreon.com/Steampunkette

D&D General 5e System Redesign through New Classes and Setting. A Thought Experiment.

I will say.. you -have- given me an interesting idea on how to 'sell' the Swordmage as a really solid tank... The promise of what Paladin was 'supposed' to be, which gets undercut hard by Aura of Protection. A high AC target that you slap around with spells because for all the big powerful plate...

They do not... but also Magic bonuses would apply. So a +3 Studded Leather (Brigandine) or Breastplate would put them up to a 25 with a 27 if they have a shield, 30 if the shield is also +3... That's insane levels of 'always on' AC, even at high end... Fighters and Paladins are looking at an AC...

D&D General 5e System Redesign through New Classes and Setting. A Thought Experiment.

So in Light Armor your AC would be 11/12+Dex+Int, and in Medium armor it would be 12/13/14/15+((Dex+Int) max 2)? That would make a plausible high end AC of 22 (24 with a shield, 29 if you spend a reaction and a spell slot) in Light Armor... and Medium Armor would be at 17 (19 with a shield, 24...

D&D General 5e System Redesign through New Classes and Setting. A Thought Experiment.

Also... If the Swordmage had good saves of Str/Dex, but used Int in place of Dex while armored up and Int in place of Str/Dex when using attack cantrips... Would that be really clever design or really bad design? 'Cause then at high end you could drop your 8 in Strength and your 10 in Dex and...

D&D General 5e System Redesign through New Classes and Setting. A Thought Experiment.

I played it a loooong time ago, yeah. So here's my big thought for the season arc/metaplot for an adventure so that it has some attainable goals and meaningful impact without 'destroying' the setting: Prologue is the invasion. The war has begun, and your party is fighting back against it...

That -suuuucks-... but also... https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/lamb-consumption-by-country https://www.helgilibrary.com/indicators/sheep-and-goat-meat-consumption-per-capita/new-zealand/ It's down from 14kg last year to 13kg this year. (So far). Now that's -obviously- down...

For the same reason most Americans don't understand New Zealand's lamb 'obsession'. You don't have much access to it! A well roasted turkey has a crispy delicious skin, juicy meat, and takes other flavors as well as chicken if not better. After dismantling that bird I tore the breasts into...

In case anyone's curious how the bird came out: Everything under the wire grill is diced aromatics and turkey drippings.

As I roast a spatchcocked turkey in the oven, I am considering what kind of adventure would best suit such a setting and style. And I am forced to admit, perhaps unsurprisingly, that the episodic structure of the 80s shows would actually make a really great way to handle things and help to give...

D&D General 5e System Redesign through New Classes and Setting. A Thought Experiment.

Yes, it is! And also no it isn't. There's overlap, there. Any setting WotC puts out is going to result in -some- playerbase splitting. As people who want to play in an Eberron campaign and people who want to play in an FR campaign won't be sitting down at the same table to play together in...

D&D General 5e System Redesign through New Classes and Setting. A Thought Experiment.

The only people who can do that are WotC because it's their intellectual property. And they're not going to do it because it would be direct competition for the Remembered Realms. Ehhh... sure? But that requires forethought some 50ish years in advance for some settings. And for some settings...
