D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

Not in your personal game. In default D&D, absolutely. Default D&D isn't about any specific culture.

Frieren is amazing. Delicious in Dungeon I couldn't get into.

The idea that 5e is intended to be cosmopolitan isn't correct. In the PHB is tells the players as the very first thing to check with the DM to see what kind of game he is going to run. In the DMG under settings it tells the DM to let the players know about the setting expectations so that they...

And as a player you should want to avoid asking for things anyone else, including the DM, dislikes.

Where is it stated that personal settings are intended to be cosmopolitan? I see language in the PHB that says the opposite. It tells players to check with the DM to see if there have been any changes that affect character creation.

How is... Player 1 picks and really enjoys playing a dwarf. Player 2 picks and really enjoys playing a gnome. Player 3 picks and really enjoys playing a tortle. player 4 picks and really enjoys playing a human. More cohesive and entertaining than... Player 1 picks and really enjoys playing a...

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

So what. Having some ultra remote possible connection does not make them Norse elves. They are not Norse at all. They are D&D elves with the D&D lore we have been given. That's a great home brew idea.

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

Not Norse ones. Mordenkainen's has not been overriden by 5.5e elven lore yet, so the lore in it still applies. If and when a new book appears, and it's Norse elves, you can have D&D Norse elves that aren't home brew.

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

Yes, and to date, none of them are Norse. We did get Norse dwarves in 3.5e, though. Sure, but it has not done so for elves. Doing so is homebrew and really has no place being stated as "How elves are" in a discussion of D&D elves. But it isn't, because the lore doesn't back you up. As I...

D&D General So how do Half-Elfs feel different to Elfs?

That's pretty cool if that's how you run them in your game, but when folks are talking about elves in a D&D thread, typically they are talking about D&D elves which are not that way in the D&D lore.

That's pretty dismissive. What is trivial to one person is major to another and vice versa. It helps to keep that in mind in discussions of subjectivity like this.

To me when I see "dislike" that goes above and beyond "aesthetic preference." I have aesthetic preferences. Bending the vast majority of those doesn't really have an impact on me. Something I actively dislike, though, will have a negative impact on my enjoyment.

If the player knows the DM doesn't like dragonborn to the point that they are not in game and wants to play one anyway, that says a lot about the player and not anything that's good. I'd never be like, "So you hate elves, eh? Well I want to play one so you have to include him. Muahahahaha!"...

In my game dragonborn are not low power. They are about a CR 3 or 4 and not at all appropriate for PC play.

I've played in a no elf setting. It didn't bother me at all, because there are other fun playable races. My ability to have fun isn't limited to elf only.

It's like 183(includes all the variants) for 5e, but god forbid one of them isn't included in a setting.

Even more than that, "Stupidly OP" and "A pretty good spell" are the exact same thing. One DM's OP is another DM's pretty good spell, which is the third DM's it's an okay spell.

But you don't get your powers definitely from a deity in Eberron. Nobody is saying that the DM can't remove the limitations that exist in Eberron. We're saying they do factually exist in Eberron, and we are correct. There are limitations built into the setting, and those limitations are...
