Pathfinder OGL/3.5 RPG system from Paizo

I think this is great news. Fans of D&D have yet another option now in terms of supported games. If 4th edition is awesome, that's great. If it's not your cup of tea, you can still play 3.(7)5 with Pathfinder, and it will have support from the guys who do some of the best modules in the...

Pathfinder 1E Paizo making a decision

Interesting. Paizo has a chance to sway a lot of people who are still on the fence about 4th edition.

    Flowchart of the Editions

Those books did have an influence, but not more of an influence than a dozen or so other supplements that were also out and about. Do we count the Complete class books as an edition of their own? I don't think the Player's Option series can really be considered a revision of the game because...

    Flowchart of the Editions

Besides being done in hardcover and having the same layout pattern as the revised Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide, I don't think there's a lot in the Player's Option books that really added to D&D in the long run. Those books, while containing some good ideas, got abandoned fairly...

    OotS 539 is up

Wow...that was the best strip the comic's had in ages. I'm still laughing.

    Flowchart of the Editions

Yes indeed. I don't know if it should count as a separate edition, though, since it was basically a repackaging of the 1991 set. Also, it was kind of a rip-off, as it was released after the Rules Cyclopedia went out of print. Basically, you were stuck in the level 1-5 area unless you switched to...

    Long-Term Injury Fun?

I remember the critical hit tables in Combat & Tactics, which was basically a way to give PCs crippling long-term injuries. I remember playing a total of one session using those rules, in which an aboleth shattered my PC's kneecap midway through a dungeon. Those were some fun tables, although...

    D&D 4E If Not 4e, Then...

My current strategy is to stick with 3.5 unless 4th edition really blows me away. Other than that, I'll be keeping an eye on the development of the next edition of Hackmaster to see if it can lure me away from D&D.

    Flowchart of the Editions

Looks to me like you're missing the "Classic Dungeons & Dragons" set that came out in 1994. It was basically a repackaging of the 1991 black box, though. I think there was also a 1998 D&D set, but that might have been an introduction to AD&D instead.

    infravision: how do one see?

I used infravision as the ability to see heat and cold at first. Eventually, I switched over to the equivalent of darkvision to make things easier.

Would you Swap 3.5e for Exalted?

Not interested. Exalted and D&D fill two entirely different niches, in my opinion. I'd be interested in checking out Exalted, but not at the expense of another game I enjoy. The only way I'd be interested in this offer was if I was convinced that 4th edition is a replacement for 3rd edition. As...

D&D 4E I wish we had Magic artists for 4e.

I think the 4th edition art team has a lot of talent. The main question is whether they'll be asked to put that to good use, or if they'll be drawing characters in action hero poses all the time. Using the Player's Handbook cover as an example, the characters are standing there in a pose like...

    Le Gamers de Femme

I think it's a combination of preconceived notions, marketing, and many current players not serving well as equal opportunity ambassadors to the game. My experience is that most new players are introduced to the game by existing players rather than learning the system themselves. A lot of gamers...

Chronicles of Prydain - Has anyone ever based a campaign on it?

Th Chronicles of Prydain remains my favorite fantasy series, bar none. While I've never run a game set in Prydain, I have taken the series as inspiration for some of my campaign setting. In terms of its influence on D&D, I was always pretty certain that the 2nd edition bard was very much...

    Meditations on BECMI/Classic

I love Classic D&D. That said, I always scratch my head during conversations like this, since I've run every edition of D&D like I ran BECMI. Maybe I'm spoiled with players who don't care if I forget rules. Or maybe I've just been playing AD&D and 3e wrong all these years. ;)

4E or 3.5 or something else - what's in your future?

I haven't ruled out the possibility of switching over to 4th edition, but so far none of the previews have convinced me that it fits my gaming style as well as 3rd edition does. I have snagged some 4th edition-inspired house rules, but it looks like I'll be passing on this edition, unless the...

    Why won't you switch?

The two big things that keep me from being excited about 4th edition right now are: -Focus on tactical combat. I hate using a battle grid. While 3rd edition works fine without using minis, the previews from 4th edition suggest to me that working without a grid will be fairly difficult...

How many classes do you prefer in a RPG?

I was just fine with the 7 available in basic D&D, although I was happy when I got into AD&D and found more options. I like the array of classes in core 3rd edition, and feel like they could probably knock off a couple without bothering me. I'd say anywhere from 6-12 is a good mix of classes...

    Is 3x D&D a rules-heavy system? Is that a good/bad thing?

I think it depends on what you use. Using all the supplements and extraneous rules, it's probably pretty rules heavy. I use just the core books, and don't find it rules heavy at all (but neither is it rules light). The core is simple enough to teach people how to play and play well in a single...

in 1st Edition...did you...assume that Corellon Larethian put out Gruumsh's eye?

I've never used Corellon or Gruumsh in my games.
