Are the lizardfolk, aarakokra, and minotaurs bland, tepid, safe, and boring in the 2025 MM? Somehow they managed to do justice to these species. Why not orcs, duergar, and drow? The whole "they're humanoids and we don't use humanoids" is absolutely a dodge.

I always thought this stat block description from 13th Age was funny. And it sort of gets to the point of how to treat sentient creatures, though I don't think 13th Age did a fantastic job of this back then but this was just a good example.

Exactly. They trail far behind most other publishers when it comes to handling things like this. Ancestries and Culture was written years ago and they still just went with "species". Their own setting, Eberron, had fantastic ways to change how the "monstrous" races are handled and they ignored...

My problem is that in their own setting, Eberron, gnolls aren't fiends and goblins aren't fey. It takes like one sentence to fix a lot of this stuff and they did it for minotaurs and to a lesser degree with lizardfolk.
