D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

I honestly don’t know. D&D Beyond’s acquisition being the catalyst is just a hypothesis.

Why Dungeons & Dragons Isn't Putting Out a Campaign Book in 2025

Most, if not all, the monsters are available online: https://open5e.com/monsters They're also pretty reskinnable. Starter set adventures, for me, are just as useful as small drop-in adventures. Thousands of campaigns built off of Phandelver.

Why Dungeons & Dragons Isn't Putting Out a Campaign Book in 2025

They've been doing that for the past ten years, haven't they? Lost Mine of Phandelver Tales of the Yawning Portal Ghosts of Saltmarsh Dragon of Icespire Peak Candlekeep Mysteries Radiant Citadel Keys to the Golden Vault Dragons of Stormwreck Isle Whether you consider these easy to insert is...

Dragonlance "You walk down the road, party is now level 2."

I've always said that level 1 should be a stern conversation and a fight with a giant rat.

    Other Modes of RPG Play?

Yeah, I think limiting and selecting specific sourcebooks is a great way to get one game to feel different than another. I did this with my various Midgard games.

    Other Modes of RPG Play?

I know little of Magic and less of Warhammer but I know in magic, there are many formats, some of them community-driven like Commander. There's Commander Standard Booster draft Sealed Deck and so on: All of them are still magic but the way they play and feel, and even which cards you use...

    Other Modes of RPG Play?

Kind of? I think the first two often show up in the same game and intrigue can fall into a lot of games. There are a few intrigue-style RPGs, though.

D&D 5E (2014) The "Perfect" (for me anyway...) Ability Generation System(s)

I mean you don't add +2 because of your background or species of whatever. In TOV, for example, once you've calculated your abilities, you're done with abilities.

    Other Modes of RPG Play?

The Ray Winninger interview got a lot of attention but I failed to talk about Mike Mearls's interview with Stan! on the same channel. Mike brings up a really interesting thought that might have gotten buried in the other thread I wanted to pull on: The different modes of RPG play. Mike brings...

If you had to GM your first game again

I don't remember my first game but I remember my first campaign in high school in the 80s. I thought it was pretty good. The characters fought the Zhentarim in the Cormyr area and eventually got Manshoon to blow up his own tower using a fully charged staff of the archmagi which sent all the...

D&D 5E (2014) The "Perfect" (for me anyway...) Ability Generation System(s)

I'm a fan of bonus-based standard arrays with no bonuses granted from other features: +3, +2, +2, +1, 0, 0 Tales of the Valiant's standard array is also super fast and easy: 16, 14, 14, 13, 10, and 8 That's close to mine.

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

My own style guide is: "D&D 2024" for the whole system. "D&D 2024 Player's Handbook" or "D&D 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide" and "D&D 2025 Monster Manual". (I'm willing to omit "D&D" on those if the context allows. That works for me and helps clarify it from other 5e books coming out around the...

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

That's fair. There are a lot of house rules zipping around. Lots of ways to play. Theater of the Mind, heavily gridded combat, online, offline, small groups, large groups. I do think the new rules are less flexible for lots of different styles of play even if they did focus on the most common...

D&D General Ray Winninger on 5e’s success, product cadence, the OGL, and more.

I can't speak for him but on the interview Mike did with Stan!, he talked about how Magic has like seven ways to play and Warhammer has even more but there's really only one way to play D&D and yet there could be many more. It's a pretty interesting thought. I think there has been some attempts...

I am now confident that we'll never come to an agreed upon name. I'm going with D&D 2024.
