Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

How they implemented backgrounds is one of the big failings of D&D 2024. Luckily, its a very easy fix by defaulting to the "Backgrounds and Species from Older Books" guideline on page 38 of the PHB, which lets you choose your own ability modifiers and origin feat. It speeds things up even...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

For ten years I struggled a lot with this stuff and then Doom points from Tales of the Valiant came out. I renamed them "dreadful blessings" in my game so I could flavor them as things like "Blessings of the Nameless King" or "Blessings of Ibraxus" or whatever. I replace Legendary Resistance...

D&D General Initial Thoughts on the Two 2025 Forgotten Realms books

It's worth noting that Jason Tondro was the lead designer and he's been writing RPG stuff for a while. He was at Paizo before he was at WOTC.

D&D General Initial Thoughts on the Two 2025 Forgotten Realms books

It's funny, I was just looking at sections of the new FR Heroes book's Guide to the Realms, where there are more than one instance of "this forest is filled with dangerous monsters". Many of them are good actionable descriptions but some are too vague for my liking. All the rest of what you...

D&D General Ben Riggs interviews Fred Hicks and Cam Banks, then shares WotC sales data.

This is one of the ideas that got me all fired up in this thread. I don't think I heard it here but in other threads and other conversations I heard: "I want a new D&D where they get rid of ability scores and bonuses and make it class-less and level-less" and I just shake my head. It's like...

On the topic of innovation, it was interesting to see that the new D&D 2024 Forgotten Realms Adventures book has a big focus on bastions and renown. You can decide for yourselves if you think either of those are truly innovative or if you like them at all, but WOTC is clearly focusing on that...

Having spent time with D&D before the delve format, than with the delve format at the end of 3e and throughout 4e, and now without it again, here's my observation. There was a time where I really felt like D&D was a combat game and the more they could to do reinforce and streamline that aspect...

D&D General Initial Thoughts on the Two 2025 Forgotten Realms books

I wouldn't get them if I wasn't planning to run games in the Forgotten Realms. You can always find stuff to steal for your home game but I don't know that there's a lot of value here. The work you'd need to do to reskin a lot of this stuff into a homebrew campaign is a lot more than turning FR...

D&D General Initial Thoughts on the Two 2025 Forgotten Realms books

I'm gathering my notes together for a talk with Morrus tomorrow and for a segment on my Lazy RPG Talk Show digging into the two new Forgotten Realms books. I thought i'd share my notes, get your thoughts, and answer any questions. Should You Buy Them? Instead of asking if one should buy the...

As one who sent like thirty replies to you on the thread, I want to clarify that you're totally fine to want what you want. I obviously don't agree that we should expect D&D to come out with a 6th edition that both veers away from 5e and also happens to mesh with whatever we want. My view is...

I don't know that it'll change anytime soon. That really was one of the biggest issues with 4e. Many said if it had been a wargameish fork of D&D it would have been treated very differently.

I hear you but this is where my brain breaks down. We have Daggerheart! It's right here! The only thing it's missing is the trademark. Anyone outside of the hobby wouldn't bat an eye if you called it D&D to get them in the door and anyone who would know the difference shouldn't really care...

Sure, I'm not saying we shouldn't buy or enjoy D&D. I do. I have a D&D 2024 / D&D 2014 / A5e game this every evening! If I was starting a new 5e campaign, it would almost certainly be D&D 2024. I dig it. I'm arguing that if we have a hope that D&D somehow evolves beyond 5e into something else...

Stepping away from all the other stuff we've discussed, what would this new D&D look like? If you were in charge, what would a new version of D&D have that you'd want?

I argue WOTC isn't in a position to really innovate. 5e is great but aside from a few things like Advantage, I'm not sure it's an innovation and more of a refinement. Mike Mearls reguarly posts on his patreon (he just posted about the problems with legendary resistance today) about the...

Yeah! I have a whole other set of complicated feelings about the new Forgotten Realms books. These are books that only WOTC can really publish. Sure there's the guild but the cut is so high and the limitations so great that outside of books like what Keith Baker has done for Eberron, it's really...

I love D&D too! 5th edition D&D is my favorite version of D&D I've played in 40 years. I even love D&D 2024 and said so in my review of the various 5e core books. I just don't think we need to count on Hasbro to continually make the next best RPG. As much as I love 5e, I'm really looking forward...

That's exactly what it is! Robert Schwalb worked on D&D 5e and he didn't like parts of how it was going so he left and made Shadow of the Demon Lord (the precursor to Shadow of the Weird Wizard) which is what he wanted D&D to be. Rob Heinsoo and Jonathan Tweet did the same thing with 13th Age...
