Tempted to offer the OP some cheese for his whine... But I'll say one thing, monster types (striker/artillery) seemed silly to me, I commonly have monsters in my game fill more then one roll, the classification seemed arbitrary and is in all honesty not nessessary.

Except that's not how it works with most game maters... you may be an exception, but most are not... you look at everything a fighter can do in 1e, and you see.. well.. attacking.. they later included rules for disarming in unearthed arcana.. but there is not much on your character sheet...

Psikerlord... if you want a "tough" game use Wounds/Vitality from Star Wars Saga... Just change it so any time a player suffers more damage then their con score they suffer a wound, and add a spell level advancement to cure spells where a cure wounds cast at 3rd level or above cures 1 wound...

For sure.. look at it this way, we (PCI) are friends with many of the people in Mayfair games, and even with their help we simply could not make the numbers work. every item you put in the box increases the cost of the box, dice, books, maps, each item needs to be placed in the book...

We at PCI have priced out box sets, it's not the books within but the packaging of the box and the box itself that increases the price. Box sets are not cheap at all
