The Problem of Evil [Forked From Ampersand: Wizards & Worlds]

I think you did in one post what I could not do in about 30. Thanks. Btw, I have to spread the love around before giving you any more. Damn XP rules.

You are absolutely right KM. D&D has always embraced the way different players want to play the game. :) I hope it continues that way.

The Problem of Balance (and how to get rid of it)

HeroQuest - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia There are four base characters: Barbarian, Wizard, Dwarf, and Elf. In a nutshell the characters have 5 attributes: Attack Dice, Defend Dice, Starting Body Points (hp), and Starting Mind Points (magical hp), and movement. * Every one has 2 defend...

The Problem of Evil [Forked From Ampersand: Wizards & Worlds]

Guys, I am really sorry that I am coming across as an arrogant prick. I went back and read the thread again. I do not mean to insult anyone that plays a different way than me. I have even said I would enjoy some of the situations/campaigns that you have played in. I am just bitter that I have...

That is where we are fundamentally different. I haven't watched much of the new Battlestar Galactica, but I do know I like the original alot. If I had to pick one i would choose the original. I like black and white sides. I prefer the original Star Trek series to all of the newer ones. I also...

The Problem of Evil [Forked From Ampersand: Wizards & Worlds]

There are so many ways that I want to answer this post that I think it may take me multiple posts. The most important point I think I can make is this. Unless the DM or campaign designer has the dramatic construction talents of Shakespeare, any attempt to create serious reflection will fall far...

The Problem of Evil [Forked From Ampersand: Wizards & Worlds]

That may be why I don't like what I have heard about Eberron. That is why I bought the Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying Game. Similar style game to what I prefer although it has different assumptions about the nature of magic and other things. Evil is EVIL though. I don't think you can play in...

The Problem of Balance (and how to get rid of it)

You don't in an RPG. Hero Quest was balanced if I remember correctly.

The Problem of Evil [Forked From Ampersand: Wizards & Worlds]

I agree with everything you said. I would probably enjoy your nation-building campaign. This question about moral relativism though is a matter of degrees. Characters not being sure of who is good and evil is fine and healthy for role-playing, but there are certain sacred cows that in my...

The Problem of Evil [Forked From Ampersand: Wizards & Worlds]

Your mileage has varied. Hours have been taken up with these kinds of discussions in my games. One group broke up. I can see how what I have said may be taken that way, but it is not necessarily my intention. I have a big problem with DMs that want to explore their feelings about their poor...

The Problem of Evil [Forked From Ampersand: Wizards & Worlds]

This is why moral relativism doesn't belong in the game. If the dragon is EVIL there is not problem. If the dragon may or may not be evil then the game would grind to a stand still while discussing if the characters are justified in invading. Not something I want in my game.

The Problem of Evil [Forked From Ampersand: Wizards & Worlds]

I'm not talking about human moralism here; I'm talking about GAME moralism. There are better places to discuss human moralism like philosophy class. Absolutes in game morality will generally work better. In my opinion there is little gained if the DM questions if his orcs are evil or not. When...

The Problem of Evil [Forked From Ampersand: Wizards & Worlds]

So is washing my car. ;) In my games orcs are EVIL. Baby orc will eventually grow up and be an EVIL adult orc that could use a sword. I don't want Scott's moral relativism injected into the GAME I play. And I don't play well with players that would rather spend three hours discussing the...

The Problem of Balance (and how to get rid of it)

4e is all about combat, either swords and magic combat or non-combat combat like skill challenges. Come on you've heard it before, if my character cannot contribute at all times, then the game is not balanced ;)

The Problem of Balance (and how to get rid of it)

The bolded text is the whole crux of the problem. Unless every character is useful at all times on the battlefield the game isn't balanced. ;)

Unless you consider Monopoly and Chess "therapy" your point is absurd.

So you would enjoy playing in a game that modeled the Israeli-Palastinian Conflict? Sorry, I play games to escape reality, not model it badly.

The Problem of Evil [Forked From Ampersand: Wizards & Worlds]

We generally do not bog down our games with questions about motivations or moral quandaries. We drink wine and happily slaughter orcs. In general the DMs/or I set up the situations with little or no ambiguity; that's what we want out of the game. Although I have gamed with a few that wanted to...
