Ryan Dancey -- Hasbro Cannot Deauthorize OGL

Only with a unilateral contract ("you can use my stuff"). If there was consideration (which tends to be read as obligation rather than paying an actual fee) on the part of both parties ("you can use my stuff but you will have to do this in return"), it requires both to agree to terminate.

Potential Positive Outcomes of the OGL Fiasco (+)

Very much coming only from my wishful thinking here, but it'd be fantastic if some companies decide to contribute previously-closed systems under the ORC license to take advantage of the PR.

95% of you didn't need the OGL and you don't need ORC

Hmm, that's interesting. The fact it doesn't have all those other PF1 references would imply PF2 is (or is at least being explained as) a "clean room" implementation (or at least, a clean room with just the SRD, although they're claiming that wasn't actually used either.)

95% of you didn't need the OGL and you don't need ORC

Yeah, the claim I would make in Paizo's shoes here is that I'm using a few bits and pieces from PF1 that are 100% my own work, but as under the OGL I'm still required to copy the complete S15 from PF1 in order to reference it on there. Which can also be argued they didn't need to do because...

95% of you didn't need the OGL and you don't need ORC

Ah, I thought (just an assumption with no real basis other than they've moved on) they were out of the PF1 market altogether now, and figured those months worth of products would likely come out before WotC come up with a new OGL (right now I'm thinking there's a good chance they'll wait at...

95% of you didn't need the OGL and you don't need ORC

The "if need be" is the important bit of "we are prepared to argue that point in a court of law if need be" Which I read as they are prepared to argue if WotC take them to court over it. WotC are not technically in breach of contract with them unless they attempt to stop them publishing...

95% of you didn't need the OGL and you don't need ORC

That's indeed the problem. There are no clear rules you can use to ensure you are safe if you rely simply on "game rules cannot be copyrighted" because the expression can still be, and there is a huge grey murky potential pitfall if you reuse enough rules from a fairly unique and complex set...

So, who can 'authorize' and 'de-authorize' the OGL?

It seems to me that given the viral nature of the OGL, this is the only viable way to de-authorize - by both parties involved making a new contract stating that it is. I would not use the word "pretend" for that, because it seems to me to be a perfectly fine (and the only possible way I can...

So WHY Didn't The OGL Contain The Word 'Irrevocable'?

There was nothing stopping them using the proposed OGL 1.1 text with its restrictions and limitations for a new license they used only for 5e onwards (as long as they did it at the first 5e SRD release and never released an OGL version of it). Although it would be better to call OurNewLicense...

So WHY Didn't The OGL Contain The Word 'Irrevocable'?

This is where it gets really complicated with questions of how much of their work can be proven derivative of the SRD, and while reusing their spell might be just fine, the fact it uses the same pattern of data fields in the same order as the SRD may potentially be copyrightable by WotC. If I...

Open Gaming predictions one year from now

My predictions: Many larger 3PPs are going to shy away from the OGL and move towards ORC unless we get a test case with a court ruling that Wizards cannot de-authorize OGL 1.0a. Understandably, most are reluctant to put themselves in a position where they'll be that test case. Some people...

D&D General My "Perfect D&D" Would Include...

That's interesting - I was a mostly BECMI player back then, where things were in feet. 1e was before my time, 2e was something I only really dabbled in, and 3e was my first real experience of tactical combat in an RPG.

D&D General My "Perfect D&D" Would Include...

We would probably hate trying to share a game - thankfully, we don't have to, and can instead simply enjoy chatting on here about the differences :D I prefer having a simple set of rules that says "when a character attempts something that should not be an automatic success or failure, pick...

It's more about the prevalence. I believe the majority of players of AD&D 1/2e did not use minis, except to illustrate things like marching order or relative positions (and this is how I use minis in RPGs today), not to make tactical moves in inches on a map and measure ranges to opponents...

    D&D 5E (2014) Will you continue to give WotC D&D your $$$

I have tried to stay away from "will you continue to play" questions, because they don't really seem to have any relevance. I bought those books, they're mine, how I feel about WotC today has zero bearing on whether I continue to enjoy my gaming library. I have had previous issues with other...

D&D General Has the OGL/WotC debacle motivated you to create your own Fantasy Heartbreaker or homebrew?

    No, because a) I started ages ago, and b) it isn't fantasy-oriented.

D&D 5E (2014) Something to consider about Grognards and the OGL...

A 2e class makes very little sense if you drop it into a 4e game. A monster statblock might sorta-work, but will certainly require some converting. XP values likely don't work at all. 1e/2e and to a degree BECMI, they were similar enough you could do that, but beyond requires various levels...

D&D 5E (2014) Something to consider about Grognards and the OGL...

Tycho also touches on this at the end of Ogle - Penny Arcade For me personally, D&D is not a hobby, any more than Warhammer is, and I feel it's leaning into corporate wishes to consider either of those one. I consider myself an RPG player and a Wargamer, who happens to enjoy various brands of...

If forced into an opinion here, I would say 5e does its best to pretend it can be all things to everyone. In some cases, it even succeeds.

The latter being by far the system I prefer to having pages of rulebooks dedicated to it ;)
