D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

Not every Fighter is a guard or militia, and not every guard or soldier is a Fighter, but certainly quite a number of them are as their background before adventuring begins. Its part of the class fantasy, just being an average guy who learns to use weapons and pushes themselves down that path.

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

I mean... "magic" as a specific term in D&D for things that do tap into the weave, and that includes druids - the iconic Primal spellcaster - for doing their magics. Primal, much like the word magic, kind of has specific connotations now - associated with the Inner Planes, druids, rangers and...

And to manifest said hinted dragon abilities, you needed a Prestige Class that effectively turned you into a half-caster; core sorcerer was a full-caster without dragon stuff. And even back in 3e, you could undergo rituals to change your race into a dragon-like one, so no bloodline required...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

I would not say that at all. The Weave is name for background magical radiation field of the different D&D worlds. Spellcasting works by manipulating that field directly, and magic items tap into it for powering their enchantments. Dragons, meanwhile, can fly and breath elements through...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

I don't want to get rid of the sorcerer, though. I'm arguing about the best way to define the sor and what way to take it in the future.

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

Ish? That's a negative definition - defining the sorcerer by what everything else is not. Which in turn means that its not an identity of its own, but rather "the wizard/warlock shadow." I'm not a fan of negative defintions like those, not only because its not really giving the sorcerer its...

But you're using preternatural to refer to the beyond-what-Earth-science stuff. Dog sense of smell is entirely natural to them. Maybe its preternatural on a human, but I don't get the impression that's what you're using the term for.

You do realize that "supernatural" literally means "beyond nature" too, right? Not even its etymology. Its literally the two words that make the larger word up : super (above, beyond) + nature.

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

The sorcerer isn't three things. Its three shards and half-ideas all jammed together. There's no point to a "caster but not wizard" just sitting there and taking up word count with nothing else added to it. These are not tropes in their own right. There's no class fantasy, no vibes or story...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

The sorcerer is in the game primarily because its got too many fans to remove. They tried doing that in 4e with the gnome, and it was a terrible mistake, so the sorcerer stays in by virtue of weight of existing fans. Its ONLY raison d'etre, however, is as an experimental mechanics class. Its...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

I would imagine the toughness of dragonscale armors and the high AC of dragon characters counts. Its an observable effect based on the presence, or lack therein, of dragon scales. Being able to run around all day in full plate without penalty while doing heavy exercise should also be an...

Actually had a Dm that did that - evasion moved your character

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

I think you're kind of just arguing over the defiinitions of words here. Magical is a specific word in D&D, with effects that can be affected by things like Anti-Magic shells, Dispel Magic, and can be read with Detect Magic. Supernatural is a word used around here to refer to effects...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

That's because "martial" isn't a power source in this game. Its a fan-made description, which has been applied to everything that swings a weapon, including half-casters like the paladin, to only the Fighter and Rogue, and even then, the Arcane Trickster, Soulknife, Psi Knight, etc subclasses...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

Certainly, Lairs and their actions are explicitly magical. Not even just supernatural, but described in books as magical. Which is a specific term in D&D that can be targetted by things like Detect Magic or Anti-Magic effects. The point was that you don't have to be supernatural yourself to...

D&D General One thing I hate about the Sorcerer

We know that Divine and Primal draw their magics from the Outer Planes and Inner Planes (which presumably includes the four elements, feywild and shadowfell now) respectively. Warlocks are taught arcane magic from the perspective of extra planar beings, which presumably works either akin to...

WotC? Not that I'm aware of. They don't really make orcs or goblinoids past CR 3~4; there's only one, a hobgoblin warlord at CR 6, and they don't even get to be a Legendary. Wizards doesn't think much of them 3PP? Yes, there is. In the particular case I'm thinking, it was the result of a...

Mistaken on both counts. The Feywild is part of the Great Wheel default setting. Its not a separate Material Plane, like Faerun versus Eberron, but rather an attached plane, like the Near Ethereal or the Shadow Plane. So, yes, its part of the default setting. And Legendary creatures aren't...
