    D&D 5E (2024) A Revised Necromancer Subclass?

Wizards and subclasses - a bit of a deconstruction. So, there are six full casting classes. Three support (cleric, bard, druid) and three ... blasters? mages? (warlock, wizard, sorcerer). Lets go with mages. This contrasts with the martials split into three tanky classes and three skirmisher...

    D&D 5E (2024) Elves without racism [+]

Classes are important because they help create a more balanced game without the need for white tower, system-mastery based gaming. That creates a level of buy in and investments that you don't get with just looking over several feats. Classes grow with level, species do not. We already...

    D&D 5E (2024) Elves without racism [+]

Stupid idea but.... maybe that's not the worst thing to happen. I played a game of Fabula Ultima recently and it had no race selection. I could pick up a starting Quirk that let me have wings, mess around with resistances, be cursed, or start with an old, broken artifact. There's a couple...

D&D 5E (2024) What's not going to cost discipline points for the Monk to do now?

I don't like increasing HD on the monk. I'd prefer boosting their survivability through giving them AC and saving throw bumps. It just feels more monk-ish for them to dodge everything ("Remember, best block, no be there." -- Mr Miyagi) than to rely on their HP to soak hits.

D&D 5E (2024) Human Resourceful needs to be beefier − compare the Lucky feat

If you're going to bring up consensus, then I'm going to have to point out that the consensus on elf traits is, afaik, as follows: Trance - in games where DMs don't interrupt sleep and have wave it away, its worthless, but it very much DOES have a use in games where rests are more by the book...

D&D 5E (2024) Human Resourceful needs to be beefier − compare the Lucky feat

Uhhh.... ? What? We've seen them since the UA Expert playtest... While you're correct that quality matters, the elf traits are all relatively high in quality. Yes, that includes Trance. Certainly, I wouldn't put the same value you do. Which is another reason why this "three feat" thing...

D&D 5E (2024) What's not going to cost discipline points for the Monk to do now?

I'm of the opinion that Step of the Wind, Flurry of Blows and Patient Defense should all use ki. I am also of the opinion that ONLY these three things should use ki. Everything else should either be free, or be improving those three features without increasing cost. I am also of the...

D&D 5E (2024) Human Resourceful needs to be beefier − compare the Lucky feat

I am of the belief that you can't balance the level 1 feats against anything but another 1st level feat. Unlike the level 4+ feats, these feats are unlinked to attribute bumps. Yes, you technically can take a level 1 feat at level 4, but that's generally regarded as a Bad Idea - its not really...

D&D 5E (2024) What creatures from existing sources besides MM, do you want to see updated for MM24?

I want to see a wider selection of mind flayer adjacent baddies. Really flesh them out as an antagonist faction with a wide variety of minions and deviances in their ranks. More star spawn as higher abomination beings.

D&D 5E (2024) Human Resourceful needs to be beefier − compare the Lucky feat

The problem is that they're not. And you're using the best options to set the benchmark instead of the average, which lends itself to skewed results.

D&D 5E (2024) Human Resourceful needs to be beefier − compare the Lucky feat

My entire argument is based around the level 1 feats in the UA Character Origin playtest package. I think its also worth noting that, because the level 4 feats are better than the level 1 feats, there's a hidden advantage to humans you're overlooking - opportunity cost. I can snag both Magic...

D&D 5E (2024) Human Resourceful needs to be beefier − compare the Lucky feat

No, no, they do not. By your own analysis of the Elf, darkvision and the resistance aren't worth a full feat on their own. Now, lets bring up the dragonborn. They have elemental resistance, darkvision, breath attack, and Draconic language. At BEST, we're looking at "two feats" worth of...

D&D 5E (2024) Human Resourceful needs to be beefier − compare the Lucky feat

Why are you comparing Resourceful to a feat? Humans already start with access to a second feat. This is not a valid comparison of power. Now, if you wanted to compare the 1dnd human to, say, dwarves or another heritage, that's one thing. Is Resourceful + Skillful + Versatile on par with...

D&D 5E (2024) Monks Are Not Tanks And Shouldn’t Be

Ehhh... Yes and no. Yes, the monk is poorly designed. No, I honestly don't think that grappling is part of the monk class fantasy, so its kind of ignored. Because of that, I don't think we can say "master of unarmed combat" is the monk's niche. Fists should be on par with weapons with the...

D&D 5E (2024) Monks Are Not Tanks And Shouldn’t Be

I tried to explain that the mechanics all derive from the core class fantasy of the paladin. Everything starts with the class fantasy. Everything. Umm... what part of holy warrior implies spellcasting, smites, auras? The "HOLY" part. Like, 99% of pictures of gods, holy people or holy...

D&D 5E (2024) Monks Are Not Tanks And Shouldn’t Be

The paladin's central class fantasy involves being a holy knight, and all variations thereof, following their own codes of chivalry, or holy commandments, etc. Fey knight, dark knight, chosen hero, royal knight... all variations of the same concept. Smites, auras, spells all related to that...

D&D 5E (2024) Monks Are Not Tanks And Shouldn’t Be

Myths, fiction, movies, games, and pop culture in general form the core class fantasy. We don't need to reproduce everything for everyone, that's what subclasses are for as well, but pop culture should definitely help inform what the core identity. EDIT - someone much wiser than myself once...

D&D 5E (2024) Monks Are Not Tanks And Shouldn’t Be

Several reasons. Monks are actually not masters of unarmed combat. A barbarian with Tavern Brawler deals comparable damage with fists while raging (thanks to bonus rage damage) on a hit, and can actually grapple / shove / trip worth a dang. This is intentional. Because... "Master of...

D&D 5E (2024) Playtest Packet 6: They knocked Druid out of the Park

I feel like one of the few people that absolutely hate the newest druid. I hate that they're basically copying cleric progression. I hate the new Moon druid - I hate that you go get Warden training and learn martial weapons/medium armor, only to never actually use them in fighting, I hate that...

D&D 5E (2024) We have Arcane, Divine, and Primal lists now. Why not Psionic?

That's kind of just quibbling over the definition of "magic." DC has it as a distinct force from technology and physical ability (the superman, batman and wonderwoman trinity). But then we get into sufficently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic, and, really, the same thing...
