D&D 5E (2024) Anyone else looking forward to the next Priest Classes Packet? What do you expect?

Like, as near as I can tell, Yaarel and Vaalingrade are advocating for a freeform skill system. And there are skill systems out there like that. Those systems are not D&D. D&D is a class-based system, not a freeform skill-based one. We would effectively need to revamp the entire system from...

D&D 5E (2024) Anyone else looking forward to the next Priest Classes Packet? What do you expect?

No, no it shouldn't. The whole point of different classes is because people LIKE niches and specialization. Even in freeform systems people gravitate towards certain tropes and archetypes. If you want druids to cast fireballs... then it should be restricted to wildfire druids. Having every...

D&D 5E (2024) Should the PHB have an arcane half caster?

Its not being updated into the PHB CORE. Considering how much they've been talking about it in the UA pdfs, I somehow doubt that qualifies as "barely remembers." Post Tasha's, we've had, what, three subclasses released in total? Across all classes? EDIT - sorry, five total subclasses...

D&D 5E (2024) Should the PHB have an arcane half caster?

Isn't Artificer the arcane gish half-caster class? They already said that's not going into the PHB

    D&D 5E (2024) Power Sources

I get the feeling that psionics are going to be fully integrated into Arcane magic now. Sorcerers basically ate the Psion with Abberant Mind, and GOO warlocks are a thing. I half suspect that we'll be seeing the Feywild and Shadowfell shift from being echoes to being the old Positive/Negative...

D&D 5E (2024) Anyone else looking forward to the next Priest Classes Packet? What do you expect?

Druids. I expect druids. Hopefully in a more interesting package so that they'll not be the least played class by a mile anymore. I'm expecting that we'll get some more rules on healing and Exhaustion/yo-yo combat. I get the feeling that bringing someone back up from Unconscious is going to...

D&D 5E (2024) why are spell schools and what should they be?

The closest has been the Hellfire Warlock PrC. 5e converted a blood witch from the Cult of Ravnos as a fiend warlock as well.

D&D 5E (2024) One thing that Rangers need in 1D&D if they will keep spellcasting for rangers.

I think that Rangers, as "experts," should have a stronger tie between their magic and their signature skills. IE stealth, animal handling, survival, nature, etc. I don't think that anyone would argue that bard magic isn't tied to their Performance skill or artificers their crafts, for...

D&D 5E (2024) why are spell schools and what should they be?

Silence is technically an illusion spell. And, hey, its very scholarly arcane-like, but again... Detect Magic. The primarily use of spell schools (outside of Wizard subclasses) is as a tool for identifying and dealing with magic you find in the course of adventuring. There needs to be some...

D&D 5E (2024) why are spell schools and what should they be?

I dunno. I'd argue that the 8 we have are rather logical and thematically appropriate. And yet designers, and players and DMs, still argue everything to death. You're always always always going to have people messing up where things belong or arguing what is what. Simple and superficial, or...

D&D 5E (2024) why are spell schools and what should they be?

Undrave - Okay, if you don't find it intuitive.... What would you find that's both intuitive AND useful in play? Because if its just flavor texting and nothing to back it up, there's no point to it and will be ignored more than schools are now.

D&D 5E (2024) One thing that Rangers need in 1D&D if they will keep spellcasting for rangers.

Its less because its a legacy thing, and more because its just a massive trope for spellcasters to need to chant in arcane languages or make hand motions. And, yes, its part of the whole gagged, hands bound wizard schtick. Look, it does rarely come up in play, but that doesn't mean that its...

D&D 5E (2024) One thing that Rangers need in 1D&D if they will keep spellcasting for rangers.

That sounds like a DM issue, not a rules one. I've met my share of DMs that really hate anything stealth, not just casting while stealthy. And removing the need for components basically means it makes it harder to bind a spellcaster when they're already so powerful.

D&D 5E (2024) why are spell schools and what should they be?

Sure it makes sense. When all is said and done, all arcane magic is manipulating energy in some way or another, after all. Arcane magic in the Realms is tapping into the energy and forces of the Weave and shaping them. Arcane magic in Dragonlance is pulling power from the Moons and shaping it...

D&D 5E (2024) One thing that Rangers need in 1D&D if they will keep spellcasting for rangers.

I don't really like making the spellcasting system any stronger than it needs to be. I mean, really, how difficult is it to whisper a prayer to the spirits nature (V), pull out a dagger (M), and throw it (S) from several dozen feet away under cover? Replace dagger with arrow and...

D&D 5E (2024) why are spell schools and what should they be?

They make a lot more sense when viewed under the lens of the Detect Magic spell and the idea of magic investigation. You break into an archmage's crypt and pull up Detect Magic. You spot a glowing wall. Why is it glowing? The spell returns "Illusion" or "Transmutation" school, so you figure...

D&D 5E (2024) Arcane/Divine/Primal Spell Lists: Are the Benefits Real?

Look, its a solution that works if the writers insist on going forwards with this whole spell school thing. The resulting spell list is big, yes, but lets be fair. Most of it is bloated with extremely niche spells that very likely will never see use, or there's significant overlap with other...

D&D 5E (2024) Arcane/Divine/Primal Spell Lists: Are the Benefits Real?

The Bard actually seems to work well if you just give them all Divination/Illusion/Tramsmutation/Enchantment spells from all power sources, not just arcane. The only non-Arcane Illusion is Silence, which is normally a bard spell anyways. With Divination, there's a host of new spells, like...

D&D 5E (2024) Is Shield to strong of a spell? Should and how would it be changed for OneD&D?

Fun fact- I never called Shield broken. I just said that I want it balanced with the martial features and the DD feat. I made no cases about in game or white room scenarios. Either you are confusing me with others or assuming things about me. I mean you're also kinda contradicting yourself...

D&D 5E (2024) Is Shield to strong of a spell? Should and how would it be changed for OneD&D?

With all due respect, if the only defense you got up as a level 12 Bladesinger is mage armor, shield and subclass abilities, you are missing out. Blur, mirror image, blink, greater invisibility, haste, Tasha's Otherworldly Guise...
