D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

Amusingly enough, the definition of Elemental from the MM25 is still "hails from the elemental planes." Which is at odds with how merfolk and lizardfolk are depicted. So, the book itself remains confused on the matter.

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

Honestly, I would have expected more complaints about how to explain mortal, flesh and blood creatures as elementals and fiends. I don't think anyone expects a lizardman sovereign to be suddenly an immortal spirit, but rather just a mortal that's inexplicitly immune to Hold Person and the like.

Here's the thing. They did. Like with the whole warlock level 3 patreon video and the backlash that came from it. JC provided an in character, story-based explanation. It just wasn't popular.

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

WRONG. Everyone plays MY way, or they shall be made to SUFFER. You know, the usual. I think its one thing to admit that you aren't vibing with the new rules. Its another to complain about sour grapes on the way out and engage in mud-slinging edition-warring using memes and hurt feelings...

D&D General The Monsters Know What They're Doing ... Are Unsure on 5e24

I remember when the paladin shifted from a mundane horse mount in 3e to a summoned beast in 3.5. The mundane concerns of caring for an actual animal were impractical when it came to dungeon delving. So, they got rid of it.

D&D 5E (2024) Ranger sub-class that make somewhat decent melee?

Levels 1-4, a TWFing Ranger is actually considered to be one of the best damage dealers, if not THE best. Levels 5-9? A bit trickier, since so many of the best combat spells for a Ranger are going to be Concentration. I've seen people put together a Warcaster + Duel Wielding feat mix, then...

D&D 5E (2024) So, what does the Artificer "replace"?

My argument: "Here's a list of all archer-y abilities Ranger has, and that I'm considering." Your response: "You didn't take the Ranger abilities into account!" Respond to my actual points instead of made up ones, and I will happily discuss.

D&D 5E (2024) What 2024 class have you played the most

okay, so, question. Was it just a name, did he have an average of three toes each foot, or was it six toes on one foot?

D&D 5E (2024) So, what does the Artificer "replace"?

Kindly stop twisting my words. I was very clear that Conjure Barrage and Lightning Arrow count as archery spells, for instance. Furthermore, the majority of my argument was primarily based around Fighter's core features, not any specific subclass. I'm done. Have a good one.

D&D 5E (2024) What 2024 class have you played the most

I tend to focus on hybrid classes - paladin, ranger, warlock, and now artificer. Current character is fiend blade'lock.

    D&D 5E (2024) Building a High Damage Artificer?

I think so many people kinda just... assumed that Armorer was good, just because its 2014 version was good, and they didn't change a ton of it. If anything, they probably thought there was a slight buff, because of the expected Homunculus Servant on top of everything else. At a surface glance...

D&D 5E (2024) So, what does the Artificer "replace"?

Sorry, I care about actual definitions of words too much to do that. I will say that the Ranger very much does have stuff past level 5 to stay in-class for. I will argue that pure Ranger is just as competitive as the best multi-class out there. That the damage output of Ranger is close enough...

D&D 5E (2024) So, what does the Artificer "replace"?

I'm not dismissing the skills. I'm just saying I don't consider them to be archer skills. If I sat the Ranger and Fighter down together in an archery contest, I expect the Fighter to win. If I put them down together in some kind of nobles-doing-hunts-for-sport competition, I expect the Ranger to...

    D&D 5E (2024) Building a High Damage Artificer?

Levels 1 to 4 are a bit on the lower side compared to others. Your option for high damage there is just... True Strike the cantrip with a +1 weapon. You use your level 1 spell slots for either Tasha's Caustic Brew*, Catapult*, (upon hitting level 3) your subclass spells, or Absorb Elements if...

D&D 5E (2024) So, what does the Artificer "replace"?

Nonsense. Bows are distinct pieces of equipment with a distinct set of mechanics attached - there are even special arrows that exist and you can use. There's poison you can apply to arrows - you generally cannot poison magical blasts nor musket pellets. There are mechanics that exist that...

D&D 5E (2024) So, what does the Artificer "replace"?

No offense, but "archery is fluff" and all but saying it doesn't matter is an incredibly hot take. Putting aside the fact that this is a role playing game and the class fantasy is incredibly important to people... Being a ranged weapon user is a pretty clear mechanical archetype. There may be...

D&D 5E (2024) So, what does the Artificer "replace"?

AoEs are demonstratively something Fighter archers cannot do. Its definitely a point in Ranger's favor, no matter if you think its weak or not. Tier 3 scaling for Ranger is subclass dependent in addition to their level 4 spells. Beastmasters, for instance, effectively get 4 attacks as well as...

    D&D General Warlock: Shadow Patron?

We already have a shadow-themed warlock. Undead Patreon, Ravenloft. Turns you into a shadowy wraith like figure. Hexblade without the bladestuff, meanwhile, is a hexen. A witch. Focus heavy on inflicting curses and other debuffs.

D&D General Which species would you like to see being introduced next for 2024 D&D?

Another vote for Three-Kreen. But also Tabaxi.

D&D 5E (2024) So, what does the Artificer "replace"?

I've been told by others, and have come to agree with, that expecting a single short rest but a total of 12 rounds of combat a day (3~4 combats with 3~4 rounds each) is a good benchmark to discuss this kind of thing. So, the Fighter will have 10 superior dice uses per day, but between action...
