Level Up (A5E) Finding the Elusive Swordmage

Nope. We're working on volume 5 now, that will be the next thing.

Level Up (A5E) Finding the Elusive Swordmage

I'm a little late to this discussion, but as the author of the aforementioned Manual of Adventurous Resources: Battlemages, I figured I'd weigh in. That product has a lot of useful tools for mixing magic and martial skill, including tertiary caster archetypes for the adept, berserker, fighter...

Level Up (A5E) Best Beginner Build

If the player has ever played a vancian spellcaster in anything ever (including video games!) cleric, sorcerer, and wizard are all fine choices, too. A ranger would also be a perfectly valid choice; particularly something like the Warden subclass.

The other nice thing about them is that while they can be an underhanded ne'er do well, they don't have to be. You can play a hard-as-nails royal spymaster and get your Francis Walsingham on, go for a very smart and perceptive sort and emulate Sherlock Holmes, channel basically any Assassin's...

Just don't give them a herald. That's a good second PC, haha.

If the newbie really wants to play a spellcaster, a cleric, wizard, or sorcerer shouldn't be too bad, either. I'd stay away from bards (the battle hymn/bardic inspiration thing adds some extra resource management on top of spells) and druids (getting tossed into wildshape as soon as you level up...

Level Up (A5E) Best Beginner Build

So I'm going to throw out a controversial opinion: I think the ideal starter class is rogue, not fighter. Everybody knows about ninjas, and the single die of sneak attack, no maneuvers, and a single skill trick is a very simple build. It'll still be lots of fun to play, though, with extra damage...

Level Up (A5E) Every Archetype in A5e AND 3PP

Yeah, fair. Also, the assembled should note that I offered this to Xiphumor, he didn't approach me. It also came with the understanding that if I wanted any specific compiled data, he'd give me a hand with that. I think that's probably the proper etiquette, FWIW. Publishers can offer, but it's...

But yeah, looking at this chart, I'm thinking maybe instead of doing more Thematic Toolkit releases once I get caught up, I should focus on under-served class support.

I know in my case, I already am. Or at least, I should be. @xiphumor check your DTRPG library and notifications and if you're missing something, I'll top you up.

    Level Up (A5E) A5e versions of O5e archetypes in a post-OGL world

Heroes Old & New from Roll Them Bones Gaming actually aims to update a bunch of those WotC concepts. There are also some substitutes in very PMG products. For example, MoAR Light & Dark has workable substitutes for the Divine Soul sorcerer (Exalted) and Celestial warlock (Glorified). You could...

Level Up (A5E) State of the Archetypes - Feb 1, 2023

I've been into them for around 27-28 years. They've been my primary hobby for at least 20, and I did a TTRPG analysis podcast for 8.5 years. Yeah, I am steeped in them.

I have got such a full production queue right now, so it may be a while before I get to the specific thing anyone wants, but I definitely have a long to-do list to start on once I get the current slate of projects cleared!

Also: with you on the Witch class being its own thing. I want to start doing some thematic toolkit-style products that plug into the new classes folks have been introducing. That'll also give me some options for getting some more of the under-represented classes in there.

D'oh! Also, you should think about the Scholar and Witch if you do. Those are Roll Them Bones's new ones.

Level Up (A5E) State of the Archetypes - Feb 1, 2023

I mean, if we're going to look at O5E 3PP, the warlock will get way out of control. Red Opera, the Patronomicon and the Compendium of Forgotten Secrets: Awakening probably add around 30 new warlock subclasses just between the three of them. But also: I very much do not consider WotC archetypes...

Level Up (A5E) State of the Archetypes - Feb 1, 2023

Also: looks like everyone should take it easy on warlock archetypes for a while. 21? Wow! Most Under-represented classes: Artificer: 4 Savant: 6 Cleric, Sorcerer: 11 Berserker, Druid: 12 Everything else has 14 or more. So to get the classes into parity, we'd need: Adept: 3 Artificer: 17 (!!)...

I have definitely not crossed 50% yet, then. Some of the PMG ones are courtesy of Josh Gentry, and PMG accounts for less than 1/5th of the total in any case.
