D&D General Taking Advantage of Advantage; a new mechanic pitch

For some reason I didn't realize voluntarily upping the ante made Advantage turn into disadvantage. Considering I've long been okay with called shots being disadvantage to gain a benefit, you think I would have noticed that. I've already pitched to my group the following house rule for Foe...

    D&D 5E (2024) Is Cause Fear still a 1st level spell in 2024?

As far as we e been told or anyone has checked, no spells changes levels. A few spells changed names, though.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

You need nick and dual Wielding to get 4 attacks at 5th level. 2 from the attack action, 1 from Nick, 1 from dual Wielding bonus action

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

I think I'll incorporate this into my changes. Here's what I've been thinking about. First, Hex and Hunter's Mark are going to use the playtest version (with a damage buff): bonus damage is once per round, starts +1d8, damage scales to +2d8at 3rd level and +3d8 at 5th level. This is part of...

D&D General Taking Advantage of Advantage; a new mechanic pitch

Of all the additions in 5.5, my absolute favorite is Cunning Strike and it's related abilities. Rogue and Barbarian both have features to give up one of their advantages (advantage or sneak attack dice) to gain attack riders. Paladin technically has a similar ability, with Divine Smite vs other...

D&D General d20 Reputation System (it's actually fun!)

This mechanic is really neat! It makes me want to run a social heavy game that takes place in the big city.

    D&D 5E (2014) Softening Concentration

But they're often not difficult decisions. Some concentration spells look so bad compared to others that you just don't use them. I've never seen Resist Elements cast in any game I've DMed or played in except the one time I tried to use it when fighting a dragon and lost my concentration...

D&D General Shillelagh on a Longbow?

To be able to smack someone with the bow, yes. Wasn't even thinking about ranged attack casting mod.

D&D General Shillelagh on a Longbow?

Sounds like a magic item at that point. A bow that can change into a staff and can be used as a spellcasting focus would be pretty neat.

D&D General Shillelagh on a Longbow?

Would you let someone cast Shillelagh on a bow? I think it would be a neat trick for a ranger.

    D&D 5E (2014) Softening Concentration

I share your frustrations. There are lots of spells that don't feel worth their concentration slot. My Wild Fire druid always had the spell that lets you negate someone's energy resistance, but I never felt like it was worth my time and I just used other concentration spells. Offensive save...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

Maybe people get stuck on the spikes when you try to drag them through it at top speed, so either you can let go and keep running or stop. Horseback/Monkback cleric and spirit guardians, though, that's something else. Doesn't even have to give up punching; move and dash is still 80+feet.

D&D 5E (2024) Why is Ritual Caster gated?

Oooh, I hadn't thought of what taking Pact Initiate for the tome would give you. 2 cantrips and 2 rituals that you can swap out, that's huge.

D&D 5E (2024) Why is Ritual Caster gated?

I liked the old Ritual Caster letting you use a spellbook for Rituals. It is useful to everyone, even a Wizard (since they'd be able to add druid and cleric rituals to their spellbook). It also lets groups without a spellcaster use important rituals. Seems like basic magic in a magical world to me.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

In theory, losing your action slows you if all you want to do is move; you can't use your dash action. If someone who's speed was halved uses the dash action, they're back to normal speed. So, maybe they figured if you move while stunned it's because you're stumbling as fast as you can.

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

In a movie, if someone tried to drag someone across spikes, there would definitely be a wrestle and the dragger might end up in the spikes too. I do like the solution for cheese gratering being that you have to cheese grate yourself too, but I'm sure someone would find a way to break that as...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D 2024 Rules Oddities (Kibbles’ Collected Complaints)

I don't want to play in a game where the optimal strategy for clerics is pumping speed and running in a circle around the enemies to tag them all with spirit guardians.

D&D General The Case For High INT Fighters in Dungeons and Dragons

I don't know about Fighter being primary intelligence, but I'd love it if the fighter subclasses all had a strong tie to a secondary stat. Eldritch Knights and Psychic Warriors use Int, but they're not the tacticians. It would be nice to have Warlords again.

D&D 5E (2024) Current Stealth Rule Actually Works As Is. If Moving Out of Cover After Hiding Makes Enemies Immediately "Finds You", Hide Would Be Totally UNUSABLE.

Eh, I think in an exploration scene, if the stealth mission is an actual encounter and not just a little thing, a failed stealth check is going to be a complication. Think of Metal Gear and other stealth games. You get spotted, someone comes to investigate, you have to respond and do something...
