    D&D General Conscripted to Faerun

I figure tents, mess kit, and supplies would take up the donkey, so everything else is going to be carried. Because of this, I'm going light, bringing only what I absolutely need. Clothes, weapons, and some armor is pretty much all I want to carry around all day. The only luxury I'd probably...

    D&D 5E (2014) [+] How do you make 5E more challenging?

The best method is to increase the number of encounters per long rest. This can be done by using Gritty Realism or "Sanctuaries," or by not ending/starting sessions with a long rest. If you end up taking 3-4 sessions between long rests, you can get plenty of encounters between them.

D&D 5E (2014) Shenanigans - The Deck of Many Things

Back in 1E, when the party was ridiculously overpowered (they were averaging about 27th level), these morons decided to play the ultimate game of Russian roulette poker using a Deck of Many Things. They each risked some magic items into the pot, then dealt out 5 cards each. They each flipped...

    D&D 5E (2014) Challenging High-Level 5e Characters

Generally speaking, spellcasters (including monsters) are the best way to challenge high level characters. Brute force monsters can do a lot of damage, but unless you get lucky with some critical hits, they peter out before the party does. The real way to challenge a high level party is to pile...

D&D General Keep on the Borderlands - How do you run the Wilderness?

IIRC, the road pretty much lead right next to the entrance of the caves, so the party largely just followed the road. When I wrote my own dungeon, I had another adventuring party describe where it was, so the party was able to find it pretty easily. Despite having run this adventure dozens of...

D&D 5E (2014) Descent into the Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth - March 26th

This was my thought as well. The tournament part of the adventure was designed to be done in less than 4 hours, which fits into most group's session length.

D&D 5E (2014) If "Extra Attack" Was A Feat, What Would Its Prerequisites Be?

I would assume 8th level for Extra Attack. It's the next point after the basic feature, plus 3 levels higher than a basic class feature feels about right.

D&D General Social Pillar Mechanics: Where do you stand?

I don't want heavy mechanics, such as a "social combat" system, but I want some mechanical representation of the character's ability. Not every player is good at roleplay, and punishing them for something their character should be able to do is asinine. That would be like requiring melee...

D&D General How Do You Like Your In Person Tactical Setup?

This is kinda where I am. I'll use a dry erase board to show the general layout, but I don't want the specifics to get in the way of the fun. Of course, I prefer less tactical editions like AD&D.

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Have A Thread of Veteran GM Advice

Rules lawyers can be dealt with by simply setting some ground rules. I allow one pitch for their "interpretation" of a rule, then make my summary judgement. Appeals must occur outside of game time, but it's unlikely they will sway me. The interpretation is the set as part of a set of...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

The easiest way to understand Bounded Accuracy is that the game tries to make it that everyone has a chance of success or failure at most things. Bonuses generally range from +0 to +11, while the target number (DC/AC) is rarely above 20. This means that even with a +11, you have a chance of...

D&D 5E (2014) Guns and D&D - are we doing it wrong? An alternative

The most interesting version of guns I've seen were similar to crossbows, except they were a Dex saving throw instead of an attack roll, turning them into a form of martial cantrip.

D&D General Who “owns” a PC after the player stops using them?

I try to incorporate aspects of old campaigns into the current one when possible. PCs become NPCs, but if the player is still around, I often present them with the situation before using them. If not, I just try to have them act the same way they would have back when they were active.

D&D 5E (2014) How often do your 5e sessions end with a Long Rest for the party?

Long Rests occur based on the time spent in game, not the time spent IRL. Except during planning sessions or traveling, we pretty much never end on a long rest.

    D&D General I hate five-foot passages!

"Fun play" is usually a casualty of strategy/tactics. As a grognard, I recall when rolling initiative was a failure, since you should have avoided/defeated the enemy beforehand. In this case, the players could totally rush the room and have a "fun combat." I'm working up a level 18 adventure...

    D&D General I hate five-foot passages!

Reminder, creatures can close doors too. They could easily close the door and ready to attack as soon as it opens.

D&D General Times you misinterpreted a rule... But preferred the misinterpretation

PHB pg. 204: Since your space is the point of origin, it's not included. It's kinda backwards, since you're pointing it back on yourself, but technically correct.

D&D General Times you misinterpreted a rule... But preferred the misinterpretation

Apparently you can still cast it that way, but it requires some 3D logic. You cast the spell upwards, using your floor space as the starting point, center of the cube face. Since you have the option to have your space not be part of the effect, you don't take any damage. This causes everyone...

D&D General Troll Lord Games reprinting Gygax's world-building books; any one have the old ones? Are they good?

Primarily useful for DMs when world building. Since it provides names based on historical regions, you can have different regions use different naming sources. For example, in my Greyhawk campaign the Baklunish use Arabian names, the Suel use ancient Roman names, the Oeridian use either German...

D&D 5E (2024) Poll: Will WOTC change the way cantrips scale for multiclass characters?

Given that Magic Initiate is an entry level feat and elves still get cantrips, I seriously doubt they're going to change the way cantrips works. Kinda hard to scale with class level when you don't get it from a class.
