D&D General Troll Lord Games reprinting Gygax's world-building books; any one have the old ones? Are they good?

World Builder, Living Fantasy, and Insidiae are all interesting reads, but I question if they were really worth the money. Extraordinary Book of Names is worth its weight in gold.

D&D 5E (2014) Sudden Realization On Darkvision Wording

You can have a mix, however. If you're holding a torch, for example, you'd see 40 ft as bright light (the bright and dim light of the torch) and 20 ft as dim light (darkness beyond the torchlight).

D&D 5E (2014) Would you require a roll for this?

Typically a poison needle trap would be in the lock, and metal gauntlets wouldn't provide the necessary flexibility to pick the lock. If the poison needle just shoots out when the chest is opened, it could be opened without any check, since they could just hold the lid from a different spot.

    D&D 5E (2024) We’ll be merging the One D&D and D&D forums shortly

@Morrus will there be a tag for the new rules revision, or will everything be filed under "5th Edition?"

D&D General DMs...How do you end a campaign in a satisfying way?

The key to a successful campaign conclusion is the story. My first 5E campaign started with the party investigating some bandits, leading ultimately to a showdown against Lolth in the Demonweb Pits. Everyone enjoyed it, and with an epilogue to wrap things up, the story was complete. My latest...

    D&D General character death?

Even in a heavy story based game, death is always an option. I try very hard not to limit the story based on a few PCs, so even if half the party dies off (and is replaced), the overall story continues. The story of the fallen PCs, however, comes to an end.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you ever roll for monster HPs in 5E?

Pre-5E I always rolled. With 5E I got lazy, until I started using the average. Now I use Roll20, so I have a macro that makes it easy. One note: for elite monsters and leaders I tend to use 3/4 or max HP, since rolling for them makes it anti-climactic if they roll low.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you award XP and how often?

End of session. I usually try to set aside about 5-10 minutes for bookkeeping. Leveling only occurs after a Long Rest, however.

    D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on 5th…

I'm going to start by pointing out that 5E isn't for everyone, so it might not be for you. Nothing wrong with that, as there's plenty of other RPGs out there than can scratch your itch. 5E has several monster builds from Volo's Guide to Monsters and a few things from Mordenkainen's Monsters of...

    D&D 5E (2024) Animate Objects

I guess it depends on how the player runs it. The only player I've seen use it referred to the spell as Quissenart (sp), as she had a bandoleer of daggers she cast it on. Ten tiny daggers don't take up much space, since 8 can fit in just 1 square, or you can create a plane of them 5ft above the...

D&D 5E (2014) Casters should go back to being interruptable like they used to be.

Yes it would. I don't think it should be part of the core rules, but as a modular option, however, I think that it would fit a need that some people would like.

D&D 5E (2014) Casters should go back to being interruptable like they used to be.

I think some form of this could improve the game. I would start by having any spell cast as an Action (not reaction or bonus action) trigger an opportunity attack. If this opportunity attack is successful, you must also make a Constitution Save DC: 10 + the spell's level, with a failure...

D&D 5E (2014) No One Plays High Level?

I've played/ran a high level game in every edition (meaning level 15 or higher), and the only edition I ever really saw problems was in 3E. Some of those same issues exist in 5E, but the concentration and attunement mechanics keeps them from being severe. I think that high levels should always...

D&D General Wishing Away The Adventure

I've endured a lot of wish shenanigans over the decades, but I've only met one player* who would try to use wish to try and avoid an entire adventure. Generally players try to use wish, teleport, and other powerful abilities to bypass specific challenges or to gain an undeserved advantage. The...

D&D General Vote Up A 5e-alike, Part 3: Stats and ASIs

Standard Ability scores are obviously the top choice. ASI should be +1 from race/ancestry/species, +1 from class, and +1 floating. Max +2 to any single ability.

D&D General What is a Default Setting and Does D&D Need One?

There's two ways to have a "default" setting for D&D: a generic setting and a detailed setting. A generic setting like the Known World has no details attached to it outside of the standard lore. This has the advantage of letting the DM detail out the world however they want, with very few...
