D&D 5E (2014) What are your favorite optional rules?

Feats and Multiclassing are generally assumed in our games, so you could consider them favorites. We just recently had an epic scene with Climbing onto a Bigger Creature in my last session that's currently made it my favorite. I personally consider this mandatory.

D&D General D&D has always been the gateway to other games.

D&D is great as a generic fantasy RPG. Other RPGs do other things much better than D&D, since they're specialized towards a specific theme/IP. It's easier to learn how to roleplay with D&D because it's generic, because it can fit most popular tropes. Learning a specific system is difficult...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you let PC's just *break* objects?

In general, which is all we can assume from the OP, since it lacks details or context, if the character has the appropriate tools and time, there's no reason why a character shouldn't be able to break something non-magical. I'll often call for a roll to determine how long it takes, but failure...

D&D General Do We Really Need Multiclassing?

I personally hate the 3E style multi-classing. It encourages 1-2 level dips, rather than true multiple classes. I'd much rather see the multiclass archetypes be done via subclasses.

D&D General Horses, phantom steeds or flying carpets... with wizards casting successions of floating disks for fast mass transportation

It comes down to the purpose behind using the disks over conventional transportation. In one campaign, I served as a "transport mage" doing something like this. The region was heavy jungle filled with dinosaurs, making pack animals impossible to use. You only use 5 continuous disks, with...

D&D General Where is magic prohibited in your world??

Beyond the obvious "in the presence of the king" type thing, criminal courts typically do not allow the use of magic. This prevents charmed testimony and other methods that can twist the outcome of the trial. Conversely, this also prohibits Zone of Truth from being used as well.

D&D 5E (2024) Jeremy Crawford: “We are releasing new editions of the books”

This is quibbling over useless terminology. They're officially not calling it a new edition, but that doesn't actually mean anything. Hell, people can't even agree on how many "editions" of D&D there actually are. The official books are almost certainly going to be "Dungeons & Dragons Revised"...

D&D General Describe your first character and your last character (and your weirdest)

First: A 1E paladin (name forgotten) who faced The Ghost of Lion Castle and the Caves of Chaos. Was eventually killed at level 5 by my brother's illusionist who used Phantasmal Force to create a duplicate of me. Last/Current: Adam, a 5th level fiend pact warlock (yes, I'm literally Adam...

D&D General Experience Matters - The benefits of XP

This is why I point out my customized XP system during session 0. I give out combat xp, social xp, and exploration xp, so the players know they can gain advancement from any kind of encounter. Additionally, I occasionally have quest xp for completing adventures, since many times the characters...

D&D 5E (2024) How to balance the shield spell?

The problem with Shield is that it never scales and is always relevant. Listing it as +3 AC instead, with a +1 per slot level above 1, would balance it out IMO.

D&D 5E (2024) To Capitalize or not to capitalize

I tend to capitalize mechanics to emphasize they're mechanics, not just "natural language."

D&D 5E (2024) Poll: How many species should OneD&D include in its PHB?

The average in the past has been about 6-8, but with 12 classes, I'd like to see a similar number of races. This would give a huge variety of options right out the gate.

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranking the Weapon Mastery

Obviously it's situational when it comes up, but you'll use it every time you can. It's similar to Nick in the this regard, which I only rated lower because TWF is generally weaker. How is this "spreading damage?" You are doing the same amount of damage to the original target while dealing...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is character creation at higher levels quick/easy or slow/complex?

Slightly more complicated than AD&D, but much simpler than either 3E or 4E.

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranking the Weapon Mastery

I'm sure people have preferences, but from a power level how do people feel about the different mastery options? My rankings below. Top Tier - always use when available Vex - this is too good IMO, since it creates a cascade, where each hit increases the chance of another hit. Cleave - a "free"...

D&D 5E (2024) Gold & Other Treasure (Can we get off the treadmill?)

This is twice now I've been misquoted. I specifically said "non-magical treasure," which is the topic of the OP. I said nothing about magic items. For those not following, this is my quote below (emphasis added).

    D&D 5E (2024) The sorcerer shouldn't exist

If I was looking at cutting classes, Sorcerer would definitely be on the list. It either needs its own unique niche (like their first version in the D&D Next Playtest), or they need to be absorbed by the wizard and/or warlock. I'm fine with either, but just being the "innate casting wizard"...

D&D General The Hidden Stress of D&D

IME most DMs torment themselves needlessly. We always expect perfection from ourselves, never quite achieving an acceptable level... no matter how awesome the game actually goes. I've been a DM/GM for over 30 years, with dozens of successful campaigns to my name, yet I still feel dread and...

    D&D 5E (2024) Rest Variants (DMG pg. 267)

I haven't used the Gritty system, but I plan to for my next campaign. The one change I'm going to make is that a Long Rest is either 3 days of complete rest or during 1 week of downtime. This way a traveling party can choose to make a stop somewhere for a few days, rather than taking a full week.

    D&D 5E (2024) 4/26 Playtest: Hide Action

I pointed this out on the last playtest packet, and it's worth noting the change was not in the survey. Either they've decided to get rid of it already, forgetting to delete it on this packet, or they've decided to keep it regardless of player opinion. I'm really hoping it's the former!
