D&D General The Problem with Individual Initiative

Simply add Delay back into the game. It's not game breaking in any way, so long as you use the 4E rules for "start/end of your next turn." You resolve each bad guy individually. One has to finish his turn before doing the next, preventing any shenanigans. If you only have 1 group of opponents...

D&D 5E (2024) Why is wotc still aiming for PCs with 10 *real word* feet of range? W/o vision range penalty/limit rules for the GM?

I haven't in a few years, but in my first campaign I had about half a dozen or so encounters begin at long range (300+ Ft). Usually the players spent a few rounds casting Bless and other pre-combat spells before significant engagement. The archer PC would pepper the oncoming enemy since he had...

D&D 5E (2024) Do you actually like weapon masteries?

I love the concept, but I'm not married to the execution. I feel it will need significant playtesting to make sure it works correctly. Already people have ranked the different abilities, pushing people towards the "optimal" weapon choice. One thing that I expect to happen (assuming this version...

D&D 5E (2024) Why is wotc still aiming for PCs with 10 *real word* feet of range? W/o vision range penalty/limit rules for the GM?

600 feet is in fact the historical lethal range of the longbow. The problem isn't the fact that this range exists, but that 5E doesn't impose further penalty after short range. The longbow had the same range in 3E without significant problems because at the max range suffered a greater penalty...

D&D 5E (2024) Why is wotc still aiming for PCs with 10 *real word* feet of range? W/o vision range penalty/limit rules for the GM?

"Default" meaning the games rules don't assume you have one. In the combat section of the PHB it refers to the Variant: Playing on a Grid.

D&D General What is your favorite class(es), and what about makes them so fun?

My favorite class is magic-user/mage/wizard. I've always liked the concept of a powerful caster that has to work extra hard to reach great power. While this hasn't really held true after AD&D, I still find it to be the most enjoyable class. My second favorite class is also my first: the...

D&D 5E (2024) Why is wotc still aiming for PCs with 10 *real word* feet of range? W/o vision range penalty/limit rules for the GM?

My experience has been the opposite. Unless you're ambushed and surrounded, we usually have the players starting on one side of the map, with the enemy on the other side.

D&D General How many encounter do you complete before getting a Rest?

Depends on the adventure specifics, but I shoot for 4-5 as my minimum. Sometimes you have only 1-2, but that's pretty rare, usually involving a big fight or massive solo opponent. In a dungeon environment, I often get up to 10 encounters before a long rest. My issue with Encounters per Long...

D&D General How many Short Rests do you routinely take?

Depends on the group and campaign. In general, if we have a Warlock or Monk in the party we tend to take more short rests, usually 2 per long rest. If we have a Fighter, Cleric, or Druid (who get moderate benefits from a short rest) we usually have 1 per long rest. If we don't have any of those...

D&D 5E (2024) Why is wotc still aiming for PCs with 10 *real word* feet of range? W/o vision range penalty/limit rules for the GM?

Because the default version of play is Theater of the Mind, not running on a battlemap. Previous editions used to provide a random distance to start each encounter based on the terrain (pretty sure it's in 5E too) which are on average much larger than most DMs choose to use. You can still...

    D&D 5E (2024) Graze on a miss questions

I'm sure it's a divided topic, as the flamewars about it during the D&D Next playtest were legendary. Personally I have no issue with it because I don't view HP as "meat." Since you don't actually take any significant wounds until half HP, per the description of HP, the idea that you'd suffer...

D&D 5E (2024) Am I crazy, or did they just turn Stealth into full Ninja mode?

Rather than make a new thread, I've revived this one. I noticed the Invisible Ninja remain in the April playtest packet. Perhaps this is not a mistake and it was left off the survey deliberately.

D&D 5E (2024) Rests should be dropped. Stop conflating survival mechanics with resource recovery.

Something that I just simply cannot comprehend is why people who likes 4E is spending all their time trying to "fix" 5E into being more like 4E. Why not just play 4E? My group went back to 2E during 4E for pretty much this exact reason.

D&D General Having your players roll their stats

I typically offer point buy or rolled, and the players universally choose to roll. For my playtest campaign I required point buy to keep things balanced.

    D&D 5E (2024) Allow players to know a foe's hp?

Since we play on Roll20, I like to use the bars to give the players an idea of the status of the bad guys. This avoids the "I attack whichever is most wounded" argument, since they can look and decide for themselves. It's also hilarious when they deal damage to the BBEG and barely see the bar...

    D&D 5E (2014) When Did 5E Peak Quality Wise?

Tasha's was the beginning of the end. It wasn't quite the Jump the Shark moment, but it happened soon after.

D&D 5E (2024) Gold & Other Treasure (Can we get off the treadmill?)

There were two numbers for each magic item: xp and gp. The xp amount is what you got if you kept the item, while the gp is the amount you can sell the item for. The gp value was usually about double the xp amount, IIRC, so selling useless items for gp & xp was a pretty common tactic. I don't...

D&D 5E (2024) Gold & Other Treasure (Can we get off the treadmill?)

The prices for 1E were for players selling the items. Since magic items were usually random and treasure needed to be divided rather evenly, it was not uncommon for PCs to get magic items they couldn't use. They could either trade them with other characters or sell them. Selling them was the...

D&D General What is the worst piece of DM advice people give that you see commonly spread?

The "it" is everything that doesn't fit the game narrative. It can be a player who wants to play a race that doesn't exist in the DMs world. It can be a DM who wants to use a monster, but doesn't want to deal with having it exist in their world. It can be a useful tool, but when you separate the...

D&D General What is the worst piece of DM advice people give that you see commonly spread?

"You can just reskin it." I hate this advice with the burning fires of a thousand suns. While sometimes this can be a viable option, there's occasionally unintended consequences on both sides of the screen that need to be considered.
