D&D General Does anyone recall coming across any magic weapons that return when thrown...other than Dwarven Thrower, Hammer of Thunderbolts or magic boomerangs?

I homebrewed a magic trident called Ripple (a rip-off of the ultra-powered Wave). When you threw it, you could target a number of creatures equal to the number of attacks you could make. It would then fly to each, bouncing off the targets, returning to the thrower's hand. I did it as a way to...

    D&D 5E (2024) Representing afflictions in D&D 5e - which do you think work best/least dislike.

I like actually detailing out the effect, like in AD&D. Some effects might be easily replicated by the simple conditions of 5E, or even the use of Disadvantage, but trying to pigeonhole things into them does a disservice. For example, in an upcoming adventure (Danger at Darkshelf Quarry)...

D&D General Disparity in PC levels from same party

I think that the way OD&D, AD&D, and BECMI were designed, level disparity is perfectly fine. When I played, most people had multiple characters of various level, so that they could pick a character appropriate for the adventure. In 2E, we had more story based games, but due to the prevalence of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Running the shortest game?

I was going to suggest saving a gnome village, but I think I misunderstood the question...

D&D General Whom keeps the torches lit?

I seldom have lit dungeons, because it doesn't make sense to me. Since they only last an hour, it'd be like leaving the lights on in your house, only to replace the bulbs every hour. Inhabitants will keep occupied areas lit, then use torches to move between those place as needed. Most creatures...

Worlds of Design: Who Gets the Crown?

Succession is usually direct father to son or mother to daughter (depending on the system used), with the occasional father to daughter or mother to son swap. In cases of no legit heir, it can get bloody, just like history shows us. My current campaign has an ineligible daughter pulling a...

    D&D General D&D Crochet book?!

One of my players is super excited about this. She loves to crochet and do crafts in general, so I suspect she's already pre-ordered this.

D&D General How many healing potions do you give your party?

Running 5E24, and given that a group is only expected to find 6 common magic items by level 5, they're rarely found. I'd rather give away more interesting items instead, given that the party can just buy potions of healing from the PHB.

D&D General 70% Of Games End At Lvl 7?

The real issue is games just falling apart. Since nothing can really be done about this, I don't like counting them into the equation. If you only look at completed campaigns, I've found it depends on the DM and edition. IME, most campaigns have a story to be told, and the end level should be...

D&D General Have you ever retired a character?

Several times. Usually it's because the character no longer fit the campaign, but I did have a more recent one where I simply got tired of playing the character. One even started to have a negative impact on my mental health IRL, so I worked with the DM to retire the character.

D&D General Weapon Mastery - Yea or Nay?

Hard for me to say. I just started up my first 5E24 campaign, and nobody played a character with them. We've got a cleric, monk, warlock, and wizard, so I haven't seen them in play yet. Maybe if someone dies, or I might have to wait for my next campaign to find out.

D&D General NPC Descriptions: DM Formatting Preferences

Both have their advantages. Option 1 is concise, taking up a lot less space, which is important for printed products. Option 2 provides clarity, but taking up so much space, may push important information onto different pages. Personally I prefer Option 2 for clarity, so long as the information...

    D&D 5E (2024) Solasta 2 and the 1/2 elf

The decision to remove the half-elf and half-orc was a stupid ass decision, so I've elected to ignore it. Half-orcs use the orc species and half-elves use the elf species... at least until a good version of them is made for 5E24.

RPG Evolution: What Do You Mean, "Run"?

Reputation as a DM makes a difference too. I've got a reputation as a "killer DM" because I let the chips fall where they may, obliterating careless (and sometimes simply unlucky) PCs. This causes my players to be cautious; always ready to run if things start to look bad. This works well for me...

D&D General In this day and age, people still laugh when you invite them to play D&D.

IME "I always wanted to do that" and "that's interesting" are typically just polite ways of saying they don't care. If they actually wanted to, they'd ask if they could join (or at least watch). As for people laughing... I'm a geek, so I'm used to it. TTRPGs, boardgames, and vintage video...

D&D 5E (2024) Is There A New Sheriff in Town?

There's tons of really good, if niche, TTRPGs out there. While I love 5E, and feel it's the best version of D&D, I still don't think it's the best overall. However, I'm playing a weekly 5E game and haven't played any of those other games in years. D&D is a monolith, and no matter how well...

D&D 5E (2024) Man I hate the organization of the 2024 Monster Manual

Something that was suggested to me that I thought was crazy, was to organize it by creature type. While it seems nuts, I feel like it would actually work really well. You could break it up by chapter, with an introduction going into the description of each type. It would help the OP's situation...

D&D 5E (2024) Anyone else surprised they didn't do a Forgotten Realms Feats, Spells, and Circle Casting UA?

The only time I was on the D&D forums was during the D&D Next Playtest. I don't know if that was Gleemax or not, but it was really toxic during the playtest. Everyone got super divided on different things (damage on a miss and martial healing being the biggest), and if you disagreed with...
