The Many Faces of Roleplaying: How ‘RPG’ Became Everything and Nothing

A wise man once said...."RPGs aren't really games, they are activities". The quote comes from that beautiful mess of 5e recording from @SlyFlourish. I'm not sure who it was that actually said it. Calling them "games" causes.....problems.

D&D 5E (2024) There is sauerkraut in my lederhosen: Snarf's Guide to Using (and adjudicating) Skills in 5e

I didn't read this, but it has "skills" in the headline. Skill checks are the worst. But Snarf....Snarf is the best. There should be "Snarf Checks". 🥹 Player: I want to do this thing....rolls...fails Player: SNARF CHECK!!! DM: Son of a...... I'm still working on the details. B-)

The Many Faces of Roleplaying: How ‘RPG’ Became Everything and Nothing

If i had never played an RPG before and reached out to a forum to get some insight.....i'd never play an RPG.

How Do You Like Your Steak?

    I like my steak ground up...on a roll...with cheese, lettuce & tomato.

Which are you, The plan everything out GM, or the Ad lib?

@SlyFlourish suggests being the players (characters?) biggest fan. One would assume that any prep is in service to the relationship that exists in the current game between the DM and the players. After playing together long enough the DM should be able to predict (at least a little bit) how...

Which are you, The plan everything out GM, or the Ad lib?

I plan until my players ruin the plan. Then i adlib until i forget what it was i libbed. Then i go back to see where we were in my plan. Then i eat what's left of the chips and then i take nap. Then when next week comes around I ask someone for a recap....and i just go with what they say.

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

It's just a fun narrative quirk. If it doesn't work with your group.....don't use it. 🤷‍♂️

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

It's cultural. Kender society has no concept of ownership. The fact that the rest of us think that the things we have aren't for everyone is a non issue. It's a lot like people who have no filter and say whatever comes to mind. It's just how they are. I don't think its that the Kender aren't...

D&D General Oh Please give me some Happy Backgrounds!!

I think the value of a PCs backstory is directly proportional to where the player is in their life when they write it. Obviously this wouldn't be true of all players as nothing is ever true of all players. The edgy teen wants to be seen as a bad arse from the first drop. They want you to...

D&D General The Great Railroad Thread

That seems like a petty thing to do. I didn't even know it was a thing that could be done. Play the game the way you like....that's what I was saying.
