Once the game starts everyone should know that anything they can do, the other side can do. DMing by Socratic method seems like it could get very tedious. As long as a good time is had; do what you need to. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I don’t think this is true at all. Optimizers have more to do with player personalities than rules system. Some players want to work the system. Some players just want to play the game with people they enjoy spending time with. I barely know how to make a character and don’t care to know...

I’ve never met a game that you couldn’t optimize the joy out of. Balance is a myth and one the DMs main functions is to adjudicate. But we all know that the main function of the DM is collecting hit points from PCs. Mwah ha ha!!! It’s the tax they pay for making the DMs life difficult. 🤪

I do agree that anyone can play any way they like and that expectations should be discussed. I've never understood how in a games that track hit points as a measure of your being aliveness that people can be surprised and or upset that their PC dies. Its right there on the page that says when...

Deadlier combat is a choice. You don't have to be a bad DM to enjoy challenging the players. I'm a DM that prefers deadly combat and my mom says I'm delightful. ☺️

Common examples wouldn’t work. You would need examples relative to the setting your playing but I’ll try. If you suggest that an assassin go stab the governor. That’s a reasonable suggestion to someone who stabs people for a living. If you suggest a first level cleric go stab the arch...
