D&D 5E (2024) No Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc suborgins, lineages, and legacies

I think we need a lot fewer "subraces" in every race we can possibly cut them out of, and more racial options that players can pick-and-choose. The 2014 Hill and Mountain dwarf are perfect examples of how this concept was ridiculous to start with and has been diluted past the point of nonsense...

AD&D 1E AD&D players and referees, what do you think of ascending AC?

Ascending AC and BAB is just common sense. THACO was never that bad, and it was itself a major innovation back in the day... but it no longer sparks joy. It is time to thank it for its service and let it go.

    D&D 5E (2014) 15 Petty Reasons I Won't Buy 5e

That's a problem that's plagued WotC D&D since the earliest days of 4e: violently shoving legacy ideas into the immutable structure of the new rules, into conceptual spaces that they simply do not fit into, with no regard for the core fiction of those concepts. Warlock Templars in Dark Sun...

    D&D 5E (2014) 15 Petty Reasons I Won't Buy 5e

Actually makes sense, if you interpret hit points (and saving throws!) as the quasi-magical force that turns lethal injuries into scrapes and bruises. I still prefer necromancy, but nobody's given a damn about my preferences in decades.

    Who Decides What You Play?

(Existing) Generally, when we don't have a regular game going... we decide that we want to play something, and I decide the kind of system and setting I want to run, and the group usually goes along with it. Sometimes they balk and I go back to the drawing board. Sometimes someone else wants to...

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

No, all of those people have been laid off. They're unemployed.

D&D 5E (2014) Would you require a roll for this?

If you roll Investigate, you might discover there's a safe behind the painting. If you actually tell the DM that you are picking the painting up and setting it aside, there's no reason to roll Investigate.

    D&D 5E (2024) Do you plan to adopt D&D5.5One2024Redux?

I'll play them if I'm playing with a table that's using them. I plan on buying the books and raiding them for loose content, but otherwise... it doesn't look like it's going to be better than what's already my least favorite version of the game.

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

Mario and Luigi use their hammers in most of the RPG entries. Peach has an intelligent parasol, which enhances her control over fire, water, and wind. They seem to have both weapon and non-weapon magical abilities, which is how I would prefer a Magus/Swordmage to function.

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

Particularly relevant to my interests? Mario and Luigi, Princess Peach (MC Cleric, Bard, or even Paladin), Link, many of the characters or Jobs/Classes in Final Fantasy and Phantasy Star. Gambit and Magik of the X-Men. If you want to get self-referential about it, Deedlit.

D&D 5E (2024) How should the Swordmage be implemented in 1DnD?

I really feel like we are sorely missing the "two thirds" caster concept from 3.PF-- the Bard/Magus progression between the Paladin/Ranger and the full casters. I wanted the 3.5 Warmage to be more like the PF Magus, and vice versa. My crack at a 5e version would be d8 HD, sort of...

D&D 5E (2024) Things You Think Would Improve the Game That We WON'T See

Not to mention that the system in question-- the 3.PF1 branch of D&D-- is still in active development with a fanbase other game communities would kill for. There's a thriving third-party ecosystem and a new (third!) company stepping forward to assume the mantle of "first party". If that's...

    Grading the Rolemaster/Spacemaster System

Huge, huge fan. My first failed attempt to break into the industry was as a second-party developer for ICE. My tastes have changed and I'm less attracted to that level of crunch... but I'll always have a warm place in my heart for RMFRP, Privateers, and every flavor of HARP.

Why PCs should be competent, or "I got a lot of past in my past"

I think D&D calls for too many checks. A person can jump a certain distance on a 10, but it's highly unrealistic and highly unsatisfactory for someone to ever roll a 9 or 11. (For example.) As a multiply-disabled, uneducated and untrained noncombatant, I expect that characters meant to represent...

So, what is your Favorite "Villain" race these days?

I prefer antagonists to villains, and I sprinkle potential antagonists throughout my world and invite my players to choose which ones to hate. Vicious, cruel orc tribes can be allies or enemies. Hobgoblin slavers working for human mercantile companies, the Elven Imperial Navy, ancient undead...

D&D 5E (2014) Bard exists, now make YOUR Bard. (+)

I like the 5e Bard as-is, so my changes would be pretty minor: Magical Secrets earlier and more often, more Colleges in core, etc. For my own work, the Bard is the class that has the best non-spell buffing abilities as well as the best capacity for blending different sources of power. (All...

Why PCs should be competent, or "I got a lot of past in my past"

Personally, I wish that 1st level D&,D characters were a lot more broadly competent-- I am not a 12th level fighter-- and higher level D&D characters were less vertically, supernaturally, powerful until the game starts assuming the corresponding degrees of secular/divine authority.

    D&D 5E (2024) How to import "race" flavor into D&D 2024 inclusively

I agree that racial ASIs weren't good for the game and I'm glad they're gone. But I also don't agree that every race should be viable (or possible) in the first place, as a matter of making it clear that they are all different from humans and from each other.

D&D General The Not-Cleric Class for the Other Powers

Ideally, I would replace Wizard and Cleric entirely with much narrower classes. Like the old 3.5 class tier system, I would replace all of the Tier 1/2 casters with a larger variety of Tier 3 spellcasters with more Bard-like features for poaching off of other lists. Like... 3.5 Warmage gets...

    D&D 5E (2024) How to import "race" flavor into D&D 2024 inclusively

The argument is that it is real-life racist for characters to get a bonus to INT for being an Elf or an INT penalty for being an Orc, or a WIS bonus for being a Dwarf or a WIS penalty for being a Gnome. I don't really accept this argument either, but it does cause gameplay/narrative problems...
