    D&D General Frankensetting!

Planescape and Star•Drive. The Great Wheel (Outer and Inner Planes) is still the Great Wheel, with Sigil and Union and the City of Brass being late Tech Level 7/early TL 8 hypermetropolises while the entire Prime Material Plane (including Spelljammer's Radiant Triangle) has been subsumed into...

    D&D 5E (2024) Should all races/lineages have +2/+1/+1 ASI?

Sure... but only to your dump stats. You're trading the certainty of a 15 with a +2 ASI for only a near certainty of getting +2-3 points to the stats you only bought up to 9 or 10.

    D&D 5E (2024) Should all races/lineages have +2/+1/+1 ASI?

The average of 5d4 is only 12.5.

    D&D 5E (2024) Should all races/lineages have +2/+1/+1 ASI?

The way I'm doing it, going forward, is to remove all 1st level ASIs from race/background/etc and have players assign their stats according to the standard point buy (27 points). But, to replace the standard ASIs, players get to roll 5d4 for each ability score, in order, and use the higher...

    What is a "Narrative Mechanic"?

I think it's a fine point and a fuzzy one, but metacurrency mechanics can be diegetic as long as metacurrency is generated on the basis of character decisions-- the player choosing in the role of the character-- and is spent to enhance actions (or reactions) that the character performs...

D&D General Should NPCs be built using the same rules as PCs?

No. They should follow the same in-game and in-narrative logic as PCs-- I'm not going to say it-- but I see no reason they should follow the same mechanical rules as the PCs and many reasons they shouldn't. They're not living in different worlds, they're just using different levels of resolution...

Systems That Model The World Rather Than The Story

I think people overlook that we're not talking about absolutes here. The crunchiest physics simulators still make concessions to human playability and desired play style. No game that I am aware of models all forms of interpersonal combat realistically well. I like games that simulate--...

D&D General (+) Mundane fixes to the caster martial divide

Shocking grasp or inflict wounds. I'm 100% okay with cure wounds provoking, because that's why healing word exists.

D&D 5E (2024) What should be ability score cap for standard PCs?

If we're not changing anything else about how D&D does up its ability scores, I'd break it down to 20 at 4th level, +1 for every "pure" ASI chosen. Given carte Blanc, I'd allow PCs to buy up to 16 and roll up to 20 at first level (super special hybrid method) and then characters would get a...

D&D General (+) Mundane fixes to the caster martial divide

Nah. If you've got a spell that is designed to only work in melee combat, it should be a reasonable option to use in melee combat. Automatically stuffing the save is a nice nod back to older editions... but worth remembering the only casters with decent Con saves are Sorcerers, Eldritch...

D&D General (+) Mundane fixes to the caster martial divide

I agree, but it'd still be a considerable stealth nerf for spellcasters. Fair. I'm just spitballing here.

D&D General (+) Mundane fixes to the caster martial divide

Give all characters half their PB to non-proficient saves. Casting any non-melee spell within melee range provokes. Getting hit by an opportunity attack while casting forces a concentration save or stuffs the spell. Spellcasting occurs in a separate phase at the end of the round, getting hit...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

I'm not a big advocate for high lethality in D&D, but when people fall down in my games, they stay down. If the healer wants to keep their comrades in the fight, they damned well need to keep them on their feet. I make it harder to knock PCs down, and I make sure that down doesn't always mean...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter/Martial Problem (In Depth Ponderings)

I love playing the healer. I'd have loved it a lot sooner if it hadn't been shackled to being a god-beggar until 3.5/PF1.

Evil Genius Games Sues Netflix Over 'Rebel Moon' Roleplaying Game

I'm at least warmly fond of Snyder's work (in general) and I am desperate for any kind of high-profile non-Gisnep space opera. edit: Ain't to say I don't love Star Wars, and specifically Filoni Disney's take on the franchise, but I'd love the flavor a whole lot better if it weren't the only...
